Game reads Xbox Series X controller as "Xbox 360 controller" and cannot work

My Xbox Series X controller used to be recognized as an Xbox One controller when wired. That was how I've been playing. But recently, the game reads it as a 360 controller, which renders it unplayable. I have no idea what caused it, but it may be Steam related. How can I fix this?

For what it's worth, I can use my xbox series x controller AND my 360 controller (I have been having trouble with the usb wire for my series x controller, so am now playing with the wired 360 controller instead for now). I am playing the non-steam version, so that may or may not be a factor.

FF14 doesn't provide gamepad drivers, that's a Microsoft thing. However, steam makes it convenient to download them directly from the controller settings. What you should do is download the extended controller support for xbox elite controller. This will give you full functionality of the xbox series x or s or whatever it's called IDK anymore. If you so happen to have the elite controller it will also support it. I'm not sure how you access the settings outside of big picture mode but you don't need to stick with big picture mode when you play games even if it's loaded as an external game from steam.
