XI was kind of a mix of both, since part of the trial of a Summoner was journeying all over Vanadiel to obtain a fraction of the sleeping god's power, which often ended in a fight (Prime fights) due to giving em a rude awakening. So I'd hope for a mix, or at least some kind of (NON INSTANCED) dungeon crawl to reach their resting area, since the primals are more of a natural presence like how the XI's avatars were in x time period so the lesser summons have to be somewhere hidden away while the big boys are out playing.

Summoner will likely be the job to the class Arcanist.
