Controller is a whole other layer of mess when you start optimizing a hotbar for freedom of movement and comfortable rotation. It can take me a month to set up an unfamiliar job, considering how controller lives or dies by muscle memory.Meawhile there's me looking at it.
But I'm used to playing with a controller as far as FF XIV goes. Different things work for different people though and that's okay. When I play WoW or Warframe I'm programmed to use a keyboard though. I also use the default UI in WoW with very few addons attached which is considered a sin by many. Simple yet effective is how I like it.
I can't speak for the people recommending trying a controller, as I've never tried it on this game. I can recommend you invest in a Tartarus or something similar, though, if you really enjoy SAM. Rebind the keys so ctrl1 - ctrl5 are on the top row, the second row is 1 - 5, leave shift and tab alone, and set the rest in order from left to right as 6 through =. Set the thumb button to left ctrl. Now you have hot keys on one hand for 3 full bars: regular bar, shift bar, ctrl bar. You can drop the F keys entirely. You have a joystick, ctrl, and space on your thumb. You almost never have to take your finger off right click. Takes a few hours of getting used to the setup, but your keyboard becomes obsolete other than for typing and opening your inv.
