Viera still can't wear hats?

Okay, at this point it has to be you guys clowning. You literally give us BIG hats that the ears just CLIP THROUGH in endwalker, it's the fending set you get from MSQ chests in garlemald.

Why the heck can't we wear the clown hats? Or even just get the freaking noses?

Come on for f's sake. The freaking visual modding community has managed to make this work but a multimillion dollar company can't? It's embarrassing at this point.

It's a design choice. The code to let the ears clip through hats is literally just a metadata box that has to be ticked. Ticking on every single headpiece for Viera is 2 hours of work with modding tools, probably less for Square Enix.
But they most likely think it looks bad, so they're not gonna do it, where it's not inevitable (like the robes that include a cowl, or the armor that includes a helmet).

There's a modder out there who is remodeling every headpiece in the game to have actual ear holes punched into them with a nice seam around these holes on the texture, and it looks absolutely fantastic.
But don't expect that to ever be implemented by Square Enix themselves. At best, if stars align and Square Enix is not sitting on some high horse, whenever that modder is done with his amazing mod, Square Enix might reach out to him and ask him for his files, so they can implement them into the game. But I wouldn't bet on that. Since it's a modification of their own files, aka their IP, they wouldn't have any problem getting those files from the modder (pretty sure they'd be glad to provide them to Square Enix), but then again, it's a question of "honor", if they're humble enough to just take them and be grateful, or if they act like entitled devs that cannot accept something like that from "a mere modder".

I have to note that those are being demonstrated with a "small" hairstyle. Does it work with things like the big Viera ponytail or does that just clip through?

That's not a small hairstyle. It's the Lightning hairstyle. And yes, it also works with the huge Viera ponytail. The ponytail gets tucked into the hat (if you need a lore explanation: it gets tucked in just like all your inventory into your bag):




It also works for other long hair that aren't a ponytail:




And heck, it even works for the Fran hairstyle with the hair ornament:

Players said it's okay to let the ears clip through. They still say it repeatedly. But since we know that Square Enix can do that, it is not a matter of not knowing how to do it / it causing any additional dev time, but that it's a matter of choice. For some reason they have a real issue with ears blatantly clipping through hats & helmets, even though a ton of things already clip in the game, like when you return darkness to the First after Holminster Switch, when that scholar NPC from the cabinet of curiosity (forgot his name) looks up to the sky, his long hair clip extremely through his cowl, passing right through it on the way. Or how every long Viera hair clips with a lot of gear, or floating in midair.

All races can already hide any head armor of their choice via a toggleable character setting, so if the developers think that Viera ears clipping through hats looks bad, then who cares since players still would have the option to hide them anyway if they agreed with that take? There is no reason not to at least allow basic clipping for any new hats rather than arbitrarily restrict player choice.
