Support for NPC Hairstyles, Character Creator Focus

I posted in the forums these 3 questions I really want yoshi p to address during the 2022 live letter, not realizing the rules say just one per post. Welp it got deleted. So I had to repost the questions individually if you want to like for support. I didn't include the dye system one even though I would still like to see that improved at some point.

Hairstyles: Why haven't we gotten some NPC hairstyles such as Hilda, Ryne, Yugiri, Lyse? - Will we be seeing these eventually?

Character creator: The character creator could really use some updates and focus. Maybe update some of the old hairstyles, add more face options and add features like allowing us to have more than one makeup option on (ex: eye makeup and freckles, etc). Allowing us to change our eyebrow color separately from our hair color would be nice too.

The Dye System: How come we can still can only dye part of our outfits and can this be improved in the future to be like other mmos? For example Guild Wars 2 or something where you can pick which part you want to dye. (I'm sure there's better examples but that's all I could think of atm). Also why are we not allowed to dye NPC outfits?! I understand keeping it lore friendly or whatever with their outfits but.. I mean people can do that anyway? why not just let people who want to dye it, dye it.

I really think the Square team does a great job and they have definitely focused a lot on our gameplay, the jobs, and everything else. But I think the cosmetic side of FFXIV really needs some work/focus. We could use more skin/hair/dye colors, as someone has also mentioned in the live letter too!!

This is one of my absolute biggest issues with the game alongside the housing. Character customization is just soooo limited compared to most comparable games, and a lot of it has to do with locking options to NPCs or behind a paywall in the Mogstation. Part of it has to do with them adding so many new races I think, but also could go back to the same issue behind other big problems in the game: the engine.

I also agree I think they need to focus on cosmetics in the game. I do kinda understand how adding new races have more than likely been part of the reason for lack of, considering they're still in the middle of using all their man power to fix Viera and Hrothgar now. I am truly hoping after they come out with female Hrothgar (probably 7.0 and after) and finally have races in a pretty comfortable position, that they start to add and improve what's already in the character creator and add more to other races, etc.

I also think they are doing a wonderful job updating us and keeping things running smoothly, but I do hope yoshi-p will update us on what he has planned for customization in the future, especially since he's going to be talking about things for FFXIV and what's to come the next 10 years.

I want more female NPC hairstyles like Lyse, Gaia and Hilda. I want to see hairstyles that don't look so similar to one another.

More diverse hairstyles alongside NPC hairstyles

I'd like to see 1-2 faces added per race that have newer textures and the male faces have full beard options.

Viera & Hrothgar should get their own hairstyles (as well as mog station hairs)- I don't want that potential wasted on the boring and old Pre-ShB hairstyles.

Some of the face textures are very bland and washed out looking. Some don't even have nostril shading so it looks incomplete (This has been reported and accepted as a visual bug, but nothing has been done about it)

Many of the hair colours vary between races and it leaves alot to be desired. Example: If you want ginger hair on an elezen, it's tough since their hair colours aren't as saturated as other races.

The face paint/ makeup only allows 1 wearable option where as other games/ MMOs typically allow more than 1 face paint option. I want to wear 2 or 3 makeup options at once.

If Yoshi-P really plans to continue FFXIV for the next 10 years (health considering) Character creator needs an overhaul and almost every post I've seen asking for this, folks as for the same types of things so it's time.

The game has really heavy RPG elements where the camera is focused on your character, so you see yourself ALOT. Character creator updates are more than necessary and help add more appeal.

I'd rather these updates be implemented and the devs take their time doing it, than not have these updates at all.

I wholeheartedly agree with this.

While the game is awesome, the character creator is very limited, and I feel that the character creator has more potential than what is offered right now. And people have said to me "But you have all of those options how is it limited?" Here is how-

Part of it comes down to how bland the skin tones are and how nearly all of the hairstyles are just "straight texture short protag hair" or "medium straight texture hair with hime bangs" with only 1 or 2 slightly wavy textures, and a cartoonish afro. And with all of the options in actual character personalization the customization provided only allows you to pick 1 out of 40 options provided. I like what you suggested being able to combine a few options from the same selection menu: Eyeshadow + blush + a face design + another eyeshadow layer. Rather than allowing 1 choice, why not set it up to allow something like allowing 4 options total to wear at one time so it doesn't go overboard?

The skin textures really need an update. You can see weird pores on some of the faces, and the lip textures are pixelated. FFXII came out in 2006 and the character skin textures still look better than the skin textures do in XIV.

The dyes are limited. As someone who used to play guild wars 2- which has over 100 dyes of varying tone and color and material type (some blue dyes are meant for leather rather than cloth for example) I am slightly let down at the lack of dyes in this game, but it's not a deal breaker.


I am not hating on this game, I love it to death and I think square does a fantastic job of putting out content and keeping XIV relevant and fun, but I do wish the things listed above could be addressed and updated since the game has been out for 11 years and the character creation is very lacking.

IMO more customization is always a good thing.

It would be great to see things like "Facial Features" allowed on any face. Isolating the features by one specific face can be frustrating especially with things like facial hair. Scars Im less concerned about.

That is a horrible, comical alteration too. WHY??!??
