Unless you are planning on naming a character after an anime character, meme, or something terrible generic, is this an actual thing to worry about? The Bonuses. Silver feathers and 1 mil Gil aside, I can imagine we are going to see a flood of fresh character's taking up names for people just playing for the free 15 days game time with the intent of transferring the character back to US once that opens up or worse, left sitting unused potentially taking someone elses name.
Given how many primarily solo players want a house? That is indeed depressing.
I think if someone's address of record is from an Asian nation other than Japan, Korea, and China, is clearly from Oceania, or shows as New Zealand or Australia, they should be allowed to transfer to Materia. People whose address of record is East Asia, the Americas, or Europe should be blocked from transferring or not be allowed to transfer back to NA or EU for a period of not less than 12 months to make sure there's some significance that would indicate intent to remain for the long-term, not just for the Chocobo feathers or gil.
Yes, and is something that's actually meaningful to people who RP their characters; whether that be person-to-person or just in their own head WoL-to-NPC. I took quite a bit of time figuring out appropriate names for my retainers and had to find new ones as some of the names were taken.

Those one-time-per-account bonuses are not for transferred characters. They are for new characters.I believe this will happen to all datacenters so people shouldn't be too worried over migrating to the other side of the world with horrible ping. You can only transfer once every 30 or 60 days, something like that so since it's an expansion not just limited to OCE players but to ALL regions, I don't think people should be worried. Ask yourself this, how many people are willing to get rid of their hard earned home, leave their FC and all their "friends" behind? Okay don't answer that... It might be a depressing answer :P
How many people will roll a trash alt on OCE and get them to level 30 for 15 days free playtime? A tonne!
Extra thought... A million gil per new level 30... imagine the gold seller spam in a week! Ugh. At least if we lock to regional players, then that is reduced.

Again I didn't say I disagreed, just how would SE sort it? And by answers given I can see how they could do that. But if they do that for OCE datacenters that's fine. They will also need to do that then for the US datacenters and the EU datacenters when those go live. They didn't do that for the new EU data center last time though nor did they do that for the last EU servers they added so I wouldn't expect them to do it this these next times either. They can probably suss out the player's location based on billing address or other such data-driven things that I know little to nothing about.
I agree with the OP. People who are in the OCE region should be the ones to populate the data center at first. It's an unfortunate fact that people will go somewhere for short term gains and ruin it for those who will be there for the long run. Let the servers on Materia be a closed system (no realm visit, etc) so they have time to develop their own cultures, figure out social expectations, and build stable economies before letting people from outside the DC go in and stir things up.
If they do decide to let people actually located in NA, EU, and JP transfer to Materia, they should have a year-long lock on transferring off that server.
When WoW Classic launched I was on the single RP server because my friends and I wanted an RP guild. It was great until the second day when all the assholes from PvP servers made new characters there because the queues on the RP server were much lower than elsewhere. They completely ruined the server's atmosphere and culture nearly from the get go, turning it in to a steaming pile of Cess Pit of Unusual Size and Unknowable Depth. I was the last one to hang on and even then only lasted until I hit 60 a month later. Everyone else was gone within a couple of weeks.
I don't want the equivalent to happen to the Oceanic/Aus/NZ players transferring to the data center put up specifically for them.
Edit: Not saying they can't change their stance and do it this time. This was more of a "don't get your hopes up."

if the OCE people want to have their own special servers with no one from any other region thats fine. Then they should.
personally dont see the need to transfer to OCE for a house or anything else since... my friends and people I play with.. are not there. I think you may over estimate the numbers that would do that for a house but having to leave everyone they know and play with behind. maybe more housing will free up here since the OCE people will be moving elsewhere.
By that logic, servers from other DCs that gave bonuses when new should also have been locked for people who aren't from those regions? But they never were.
And from waht i've seen even most OCE players aren't gonna go to those new servers, not with their main at least (at least according to the threads here) because they don't wanna lose what they haveSo if anything I'd sorry about underpopulation rather than overpopulation.
The housing won't be open for..1 month I think it was?
Sorry, but this just sounds like "we don't want foreigners in our servers' to me.

Yea from what I have read on the forums I would also be more worried about underpopulation, at least with mains because from forums anyway it sounds like a lot of OCE players are hesitant. Again... forums doesn't equate to the whole playerbase, but I would also be kinda concerned about that if I was an OCE player.By that logic, servers from other DCs that gave bonuses when new should also have been locked for people who aren't from those regions? But they never were.

It did kinda smack me that way too - no foreigners to our DC right now. I mean I kinda get the concern but housing won't be available yet and when we've gotten new servers and EU got a datacenter, SE didn't close things up. They let people move freely because we can literally play on any DC in the world and SE doesn't really like breaking up friendships if they can help. Heck... even when servers were going down for good in 1.0 they told us in advance what servers were going to be in JP which in NA and we had time to choose where we wanted our characters sent so friends could plan out where we were going to go together. And it didn't matter if you wanted to stay on a JP server if you weren't in JP. I just really don't see SE shutting out anyone from moving to any DC or server, even if brand new.

With this mindset of yours you still created a character on a JP Server without being a Citizen of Japan or any other East Asian Country? So why should anybody else then be blocked from creating a character on the OCE Datacenter? The double standards are strong with you.Given how many primarily solo players want a house? That is indeed depressing.

So if people who've played in JPN DCs to be with their friends or FCs, suddenly find that FC or friend group transferring to OCE servers... they're SoL if they're not from an OCE region?
That's... yikes. Not a good take.
I'm not a fan of any kind of unnecessary gatekeeping, and this post reeks of it. Odds are that very few NA natives will switch to OCE because the ping is a legit issue for most. However if I had an FC filled with people from Downunder and they all moved, I would too, and that should be allowed. People should be allowed to play with their friends.Hear me out here please.
With how crowded the US servers are right now, Im thinking there is going to be a huge flood of US based players jumping over for a number of reasons potentially making things difficult for OCE players looking to transfer over.

Housing is a big one, you know US players will be more than happy to lose a little ping to get a house, There are likely quite a lot of OCE players who have been unable to ever get a home due to the ping situation we have. There's a lot of dropping dead to mechanics that didn't hit us in combat, I imagine its the same with the spam clicking the sign with how competitive housing is.
Im half awake right now and wanted too get this out before the thought fades, Im betting there are going to be other reasons for US players to jump too these servers as well and make life difficult on launch day, But i cant think of them right now.
As mentioned in the title, Not saying keep people outside the OCE region from rolling/transferring permanently, just at first while there are bonuses and we are trying to get our community sorted then open the flood gates, alternately if it looks like there are not enough of us to keep 5 servers alive.
