The biggest 'draw' is the bonuses we are getting.
1 mil Gil, Silver Chocobo feathers, 15 days free game time for making and leveling a character to 30.
Gold Chocobo feathers for character transferring.
And of course access to fresh housing estates.
I believe this will happen to all datacenters so people shouldn't be too worried over migrating to the other side of the world with horrible ping. You can only transfer once every 30 or 60 days, something like that so since it's an expansion not just limited to OCE players but to ALL regions, I don't think people should be worried. Ask yourself this, how many people are willing to get rid of their hard earned home, leave their FC and all their "friends" behind? Okay don't answer that... It might be a depressing answer :P
I actually meant to reply to this too. There is a reason SE is doing this - to make sure the OCE datacenters actually HAVE enough players on it. This is a major financial investment for SE. And while they must have the data to back it up that there are enough OCE players to justify it to the higher ups to make that investment - SE has to make sure people actually transfer there and make new characters there.
You're not wrong at all, imo.
I got 10 gold chocobo feathers. One way or another...I'm getting that twintania mount *licks lips surreptiously*
I don't care about the houses.
I don't care about the extra game time.
I just want that mount.
Healing DRK is literally... the same since ShB. The reason why people think it's a meme to heal nowadays because DRK receives very little to no buff to their sustainability vs 3 other tanks getting something useful. If you're capable of healing DRK back in ShB (or any tanks), then you'll heal EW DRK just fine.
I get that but do they look at that when transferring characters? I mean I could have an alt on Tonberry and playing with my OCE friends who want to transfer along with the entire FC we are in to the OCE data center and I wouldn't be able to because I pay in US $s? (Playing devil's advocate - I personally don't have an alt on Tonberry.) But people do play on the JP and EU datacenters from the US now, and OCE plays on all 3 and EU plays on all 3. I don't see SE excluding it because they would want to allow friends to go with each other. There is always going to be someone, Glad too see I wasn't the only one worried about this.
Not being able to transfer due to congestion from US players jumping ship is a bit of a concern for me.
SE knows where you are located in the world, its how they dictate what currency you are charged in... Well... they know your country anyway, They think New Zealand is somewhere in Europe i think as i get charged in Euros.
It doesn't matter what datacenter region you play in, they know your country and no, you cant change that on your account, i tried awhile back to set it too US so i would be charged in US$ and got told by support that its not possible.
I'm not saying you don't have a reason for concerns, but I really don't think it'll be as bad as you are thinking. Per my other post, congestion in the US has dropped by a LOT.
Unless you are planning on naming a character after an anime character, meme, or something terrible generic, is this an actual thing to worry about? The Bonuses. Silver feathers and 1 mil Gil aside, I can imagine we are going to see a flood of fresh character's taking up names for people just playing for the free 15 days game time with the intent of transferring the character back to US once that opens up or worse, left sitting unused potentially taking someone elses name.
Square Enix only knows what you tell them when you sign up for a Square Enix Account. The signup script will detect your registered region automatically but that is something you could configure signing up. The signup page literally asks you which country you are in. They don't actually detect that, you tell them what it is. Proxy do and are being used to change regions (it happens all the time when any service (FFXIV or not) is region locked). Practically speaking putting a strict arbitrary gate on players will exclude OCE players (not to mention that proxies could still easily be used to setup new accounts defeating the purpose).SE knows where you are located in the world, its how they dictate what currency you are charged in... Well... they know your country anyway, They think New Zealand is somewhere in Europe i think as i get charged in Euros.

As for which currency you are charged, 90% sure that is based on the registered region (ie general) and not your specific nation. I say this because Canadians will get charged in USD instead of CAD.
This is a dangerous slope to go down. Someone's billing address has no impact on nor does it indicate where their physical location is. Billing addresses are used to verify that you are authorized to use the payment method that you have one file. It completely feasible, legal, and has actual usage, where someone could use a payment method from someone they know with permission of that person. A feasible example: one person goes to an OCE location to study but is originally from Europe. They have a sibling or parent that is paying and need their address so that there is no conflict with the payment method. The player is in OCE (physical location) but the payee is in Europe.

They do. The PvP tournament held during EU Paris Fanfest had New Zealand listed in the allowed participants list while half of EU wasn't allowed to take part in EU tournament(Sadly I don't think there were any NZ participants)

if the OCE people want to have their own special servers with no one from any other region thats fine. Then they should.
personally dont see the need to transfer to OCE for a house or anything else since... my friends and people I play with.. are not there. I think you may over estimate the numbers that would do that for a house but having to leave everyone they know and play with behind. maybe more housing will free up here since the OCE people will be moving elsewhere.
By that logic, servers from other DCs that gave bonuses when new should also have been locked for people who aren't from those regions? But they never were.
And from waht i've seen even most OCE players aren't gonna go to those new servers, not with their main at least (at least according to the threads here) because they don't wanna lose what they haveSo if anything I'd sorry about underpopulation rather than overpopulation.
The housing won't be open for..1 month I think it was?
Sorry, but this just sounds like "we don't want foreigners in our servers' to me.
