Assassin as a ranged dps with thrown knives and poison theme
Make it a counter and active parry job. Would really shake things up.
Doesn't have to be pet focused. Could be akin to how many dps jobs have a gauge that they spend. You casually build gauge then various puppets come out at the cost of gauge for a stronger attack. The big mechanic could be after using a puppet the next combo finisher is enhanced based on the puppet last used.
In reality, it most likely will be, tho. Also consider we do have role skills as well, another reason they'd be unlikely to split up scouting into different roles.
In truth, though, I'd wager the biggest hurdle they have right now is designing around Trick Attack. If they have a goal of not doubling up on DPS roles in parties, NewScout needs a reason to exist alongside NIN, and NIN's major reason for existing in a party is TA. So, they're now stuck with designing something new that works similar, but also doesn't stack, and also the delicate balance of not making NEW so OP that NIN is obsolete.
Whatever new job they conceive, I don't think it's going to go as pretty and smooth as we might like...
scouting is basically just aiming gear made to look aesthetically nice on a melee.
I think Assassin was in the data during 1.0 so maybe that?
Whips are difficult to make look not stiff and weird in games like this so I doubt that
guess they could do an actual "Scout" with like a handaxe or some such
for scouting gear?
How about a morpher. It was a class I liked in the tactics games. You would equip a morpher with an orb that has affinity with a specific monster type and they could turn into that monster. Perhaps the different monster forms could be glams tied to weapons and use animations tied to that monster for the skills you use, otherwise it would be a mess to balance if each monster form had their own skills.
I like the idea of NIN getting paired with a Gunslinger or Dual Gunner, using Gun Kata/Fu as a means to justify keeping the job within close melee range for the majority of its rotation, with some mid ranged here and there, to differentiate it from MCH's long ranged.
