FFXIV randomly causes my PC to completely shut down/restart

It isn't a crash. No blue screen comes up. Whenever I'm doing content, my PC will randomly completely shut off and then restart. I can play the game normally after it and it usually happens when I'm doing instanced content, but in my experience it hasn't been exclusive to this. Looking at the event viewer I don't get any logs for when it happens.

No error messages come up when it happens. The system just completely shuts down and reboots.

CPU has had thermal paste reapplied and the system works correctly otherwise, without there being any issues outside of FFXIV.

I have the following specs;

Ryzen 9 3900X (Clock Boost to 4.2 GHz)
ASUS TUF Gaming X570 Plus (Wi-fi)
32GB DDR4 3200MHz
MSI Ventus 3x GeForce RTX 3070 (Not OC'd)
Samsung EVO 970 Pro 500GB M.2 NVMe (Boot Drive/FFXIV Installed)
EVGA 80+ Gold 850W Semi-Modular PSU

I usually don't have anything else active besides Discord, my web browser, and utility applications for my audio mixer and peripherals. It will happen regardless of what I have open.

Its either a power supply issue, (the EVGA Supernova 850 GA and GQ's cannot handle that transient loads that Ampere graphics cards experience.) or you have a semi-faulty 3900X that needs its VTT specified manually because the minimum VID is insufficient for the cpu's asic grade.

AMD's forum also notes this being an issue with Asus motherboards when populating all dim slots

My game also crashes randomly, it used to be like once a week (I'm not sure when it started, I just kinda got used to it, maybe last year), but now, after the latest Nvidia driver update (I'm not 100% sure in this but the timing seems like this), it crashes constantly, usually at the char selection and if I get past that, it crashes within seconds. Been playing since HW launched, haven't had issues until lately. Sometimes I was able to play for few ours until it crashed, but today I can't even play for 5minutes. I have tried everything pretty much and I'm starting to give up.

Screen goes black, PC starts to make helicopter noises until I force it to shut down.

Temperatures are ok, did reinstalls in pretty much everything, deleted config file, deleted nvidia profile with the inspector, tried different settings, I just don't know anymore. 0 issues outside FFXIV (played God of War max settings with 0 issues).

2080S, 9700k, 16GB RAM

I've previously root caused a similar problem on a client pc and swapped everything bar the cpu only to discover it was the cpu itself, intel post mortem analysis reported there was macrofractures in the chip, a fabrication defect that got passed their validation controls.

I also tried underclocking GPU today, I used the max possible "-" setting and I was able to play for a while, hopefully it is a temporary fix.

We would like to further assist with this issue. Please provide a system report from the game by going to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display.' Copy and paste the details of the selection to this post when replying back.

Is the PC overheating when the system shuts off/reboots?

When the PC shuts down, does the PC take some time before it is able to start up again?

Those hard shutdowns/reboots are usually caused by an unsufficient/overloaded PSU. A PSU has some emergency shutdown mechanisms to prevent damage. And do not underestimate the short term power consumtion of some high end hardware.

Issues can suddenly manifest and many of them do so across a Power cycle with silicon electronics, the underclock of the gpu does point towards a degradation there but in doing so you're also limiting how much the cpu is doing by proxy, you might try downgrading to 472.12 or upgrading to 511.23.

If you're one of the many that employ undervolting to reduce gpu temperatures, this can manifest issues suddenly with device age and driver updates too.

I'm still a bit confused, how only FFXIV can affect this, like I can play any other game with ultra-hyper graphics and nothing ever crashes. It makes me feel like this is more like a software issue. Also, today the game crashed quite fast even with the underclocking, I wish I could somehow determine that it is 100% the PSUs issue and nothing else, so I could try replacing it. I could totally understand if other games also crashed, then I wouldn't have any questions on this regard.

games load the hardware in different games, FFXIV tends to be more cpu bound in group content which will result in more variation to the GPU load(65-100% for a GTX 1080@1440p60 on a first gen i7), this means the asic voltage is constantly variating in a way it wouldn't if the chip was only moving between 90 and 100% load.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider for example on a (pair of?) 3090's was shutting down a 1000w PSU due to this variation in device draw despite it not occuring with both cards loaded with furmark

the new world crashes on 3090's was due to this same variation in power draw, except the variance was exceeding the capabilities of the chosen buck converter leading to overshoot and thermal runaway(melting).
