I'm a 2500 io M+ player in wow and can honestly say chain pulling sucks there too. No room for restealth or OoC-only abilities. No CD cycling to play around the meta of your party. In that game, advanced dungeon play typically has a predestined pattern depending on the classes/specs at hand and the instance. I believe what you're encountering is just a lack of familiarity with the dungeons, therefore a late realization that said pack of mobs isnt gated before one can pull the next. AKA just suboptimal gameplay. Dont be too hard on them, a lot of these dungeons do include heavily gated single packs.

I wish those Tanks would rather find out 1st if pulling big is okay or not, not be a coward straight from the start, especially in experts, even more so if everyone else is well geared.
Its annoying when i've put something down like my Ley Lines because the Tank seems to commit to a small pull, only for him to suddenly grab another pack after 15 seconds >_>

I have noticed tanks in a hurry have gotten more common in DF since Endwalker. And I blame this on the undertuning of everything pre 70 that the stat squish accidentally (or intentionally) caused.
Normally I wouldn't mind if trash is dying faster, but the behavior is pretty annoying when I'm the healer and have to deal with a tank sprinting out of reach or looking after the dps the tank didn't pull aggro from.

It is most annoying when they pull one pack, wait till 1/2 are about half dead, then run off pulling this one single mob pack to the next. I mean, what is going on with tanks just not doing standard 2 or 3 pack pulls and just stopping...like, staying put?

I always w2w pull when on my PLD, but healing these kind of tanks is super annoying - and it is even worse when I'm on a dps job and they just run off trailing mobs...Is this a common thing for others, or common in other games?

I'm often guilty of this for a couple reasons:

    1. I'm new to that dungeon and am not sure about navigation upcoming packs.

    2. I'm generally new to tanking and lack confidence in my own abilities.

    3. I often have difficulty getting all of the mobs in a group tagged before people start doing damage, making me chase them down an/or provoke to get them in range of my AoE.

    4. I feel a lot of pressure to W2W pull, but am uncomfortable doing so for reasons 1-3. If I can keep a handle on two packs while DPS kills most of them, I've got enough threat on the remainders to pull to the next pack and repeat. I'd prefer to kill everything at once, but I know my lack of W2W is likely annoying most of the party so I do the best I can do. Pulling a straggler is the lesser of two evils in that case and as long as we're able to kill all the packs relatively quickly, I'm ok with that.

I hear a lot of "Threat's braindead easy to get. If you're tanking and not getting immediate threat on everything you suck.". Tanking's a secondary role I've picked up to help my FC out and having the "W2W pull or GTFO" in the back of my head every dungeon is demoralizing so I do the best I can and hope to not piss the party off too much.

Would be better to discuss this with the actual tank you are playing with instead of asking random people on the forum. I do not think everyone reads the forum and if you would like to see changes in this behavior perhaps you can be a nice person, initiate a request to your tank to pls pull bigger or not chain pull.

Also, I have been running level 90 dungeons day and night for materia and desynth, and I can tell you that about 50-60% of the times healers cant keep a tank alive on a wall to wall pull.

Gotta speak up. And gotta do it with the actual person in question if something is not to your liking.

Sometimes I stop if I think my aoe isn't gonna hit the randomly spaced out mob while I'm doing wall to walls, but other than that, pretty interesting.

@Shuuli - in the old days, like maybe ARR or HW days, I may have offered suggestions, but these days I usually just bear with it bc who knows if a new player or even older one would find even kindly worded offers of advice as offensive or rude or 'promoting a playstyle'. IMHO, the playerbase has gotten a bit more sensitive over the years, sadly.

There are no standards how to tank as long the tank has all mobs under control. You can do wall to wall pulls if you like as well just group by group. Dungeons in FF 14 are not time based like if you go as fast as possible for getting better loot. I play those dungeons for fun and do not care if it might take two minute more.

I think the goal is to complete the dungeon as quick as possible. I just picked up dark knight not too long ago and I'd do 2 or 3 pack pulls and pause for a little, but then other party members would say I can keep pulling.

I'm not very confident playing as tanks, But I love to tank. A lot of that comes from the toxicity of running WoW Dungeons. I am starting to pull 2 packs although I prefer to pull one at a time, but I know people hate that so I pull more than I feel comfortable with. I still have that anxiety that I'm going to mess up and get kicked or belittled so I level my tank and then don't touch it much after that. I've done what you are talking about before, when I'm down to 2 mobs or so I run to the next pack, but I will no longer do that. I'm learning something new everyday.

I'm starting to love running dungeons again, I'm slowly learning them and when I do in several more months I'll try tanking again.
