I once saw this happen
I had aggro on one and it just ran away and despawned
And my name "Perry Blonde" was then pasted into shout chat because I had aggro on it

Did you kite it too far from its spawn point? They do have a limited tether range like any other hunt mark but they despawn instead of resetting when you pull them too far.
Honestly, I just don't get why they picked this design and stuck to it. What are the benefits? It doesn't bring the community together, it just enables griefing, or means that one new player doing MSQ who suddenly had a Hunt spawn on them and ran away has 200 angry people demanding their blood in /shout.
I can't see why it's necessary that the hunt fails and they vanish if reset, rather than the SS having a flat 5 minute timer or whatever in which the adds must be defeated?
Ok yeah that's what I figured. Still pretty baffling the minions still do this, though.
Yes... let's encourage even more griefing and hostility among players... surely this would be a positive change for the community...Man, looks like SE has put me out of business. SE does the despawning for me.
As for this mechanic, I think it's a fantastic feature that should honestly be implemented into any S Rank, to where if the S Rank ever gets reset by a griefer who thinks there was an early pull (no such thing as early pulls, but the community at large seems to think so), just as one example, the hunt itself will just disappear entirely. Lets keep hunters honest.

The fact that they didn't change this mechanic at all from ShB is something of a testament to how much of an afterthought the hunt system is compared to some other recurrent features.
As others have pointed out it's just an easy enabler for griefing and judging from history it's not even something you can get in trouble for.

The video in my original post details the specific incident, actually. The despawning is how I described - it targeted a player for a spell, but that player had run out of its range so it pursued until it tethered.
It's something of a universal problem with hunts that they will target anyone on their enmity list at random regardless of how far away they are, so if you have leeches who just get a single hit in then try to idle outside of a hunt's tethering radius to avoid dying it'll reset itself when it targets them.
The mobs reset when they leave a certain area. SQEX could make the area bigger. So it would decrease the propability that the mobs reset.
Cheers
Unfortunately, this doesn't help with intentional griefing. Someone can simply engage on ungeared BLU, die instantly, and the mob resets and ends the event.
Any of the crafting/gathering classes work really well, too. Great for despawning.
