What's the point with that quite lackluster story in Endwalker?

Yeah, the problem with reddit is a lot of people on it lack a cohesive understanding of the sources on the matter, so it's just spun into a variety of headcanons, the most popular being that Zodiark would just keep consuming souls and that the Convocation was unmoving because it was tempered (ironically I find a lot of posters there behave in a more consistent manner with that), plus that we definitely knew what it was they were going to sacrifice (neglecting on top of that that they were divided on this issue and Venat makes absolutely no real reference to it in her decision, which the Q&A affirms...) You do get pushback on there, but it amuses me whenever the "sundering isn't really killing people" line rears its malformed head.
