What's the point with that quite lackluster story in Endwalker?

Quistis? Likable?

Quistis (and most of the cast of FFVIII) is so underdeveloped I'm not even sure there's much to say about her beyond her chara design. But the most I remember about Quistis is her being horny for one of her students, not taking said student rejection well at all and almost making the assassination attempt fail for the dumbest of reasons... so yes, this isn't a great look.

It took you until urianger and yshtola? I felt it was barely believeable at thancred with it being entirely offscreen. With estinien I was 100% convinced that this was only temporary.

*One* of those two could have died. Maybe. Two was definite fakeout. Y'shtola just made the sacrifices actively funny after that point. They may as well have started with her. Though Thancred is pushing his plot armor too with his fakeout death in Amh Araeng. Y'shtola is just the one character I know they'd never kill off. She's in way too much promotional material.

I don't mind Y'shtola's personality in doses. If anything I've found Alisae's grouchy devil-may-care sniping hag routine more obnoxious in the last two expansions. But not gonna lie, I rolled my eyes just a touch when she was coming to the void with us. The void? Deadly maw of darkness and danger that gives pause to even a powerful ancient creature like Vrtra? Count me i- oh wait, Hermeowny Granger is coming? Ah crap, we're just going to run into Golbez and she's going to deliver an "it's LeviOHHHsa, not LevioSAAA" lecture, spit in his face, fling herself off a cliff, and wash up just fine in Sharlayan because she happened to fall directly into a rift shaped exactly like her body.

You know your story is suffering when people are saying "W-Well, at least it's not as bad as FF8!". You know, FF8. The game where the writers wrote themselves into a corner and thought "I dunno, the GFs eat their memories up. I dunno, lol." And this is coming from someone who actually liked FFVIII. If you think Squall is a 1 dimensional character then I doubt you remember the story. Play through the Garden vs Garden part of the story or the Esther part of the story and come back to me, lol.


Edit: Holy cow! I just realized the GF/memory part of VIII's story is just their sadbird/plot mcguffin moment! lol

I used to find Y'shtola tolerable but she's becoming about as much as an insufferable know-it-all as Hermione Granger at this point. It'd be pretty refreshing to see one of her theories be shown to be utterly wrong to humble her a little. I think if the intention is to make a cast of protagonists to be likeable and relatable then ensuring that they stumble and fall from time to time is a necessity. I'm also not sure why Y'shtola was insisting on being the one to share her aether with Zero when she's supposedly weakened already by her inability to see through regular means.

I suppose I just miss the days where the game's worldbuilding and story accounted for such things more prominently.

At any rate, Zero is a refreshing breath of fresh air by virtue of having a more mercenary personality to the other characters. How long that lasts, exactly, remains to be seen - but it showcases how the dynamic of a scene can become a lot more interesting when new faces and personalities are mixed in with the old.

The difference is Hermione got better in her characterization as time went on, while Y'shtola just keeps getting WORSE. Well, I think so anyway. I mean, I don't even hate Y'shtola she's just.... bland. A tasteless lump of clay with no charisma. I feel the same "meh" for her as I did for Zenos. Zenos was a half-assed Vegeta expy with 50% less entertaining charisma as the character who's archetype he borrows. Funny, that Zenos was so constantly bored since he bored ME more than half the time, haha.

As for Zero, well I'd wager her mercenary personality will last about as long as it takes for her to become our "friend" in sooth. Then she'll probably be as lame and stale and samey in characterization as the rest of the main cast Scions. Hells, give me Aymeric at this point I don't need to see Estinien every bloody day. Some variety would be pretty nice right about now.

As far as mercenaries go I maintain that we should've picked her or a character like that up at a tavern (in 6.1) instead of relying on a magic crystal to purify her for us. A simple, more generic scene > cheap devices being thrown in randomly.

Come now, the Warrior of Light can't pick up random slatterns from a tavern and use them as meat shields. They have an image to maintain!

The first is from last year. The second is from three years ago. Y'shtola ranks #1 among the Scions in both. Note also that both polls put the few dozen unique posters on this forum to shame in terms of numbers.

More recent Japanese-specific polls rank Y'shtola lower, but show a huge fanbase for Venat. They also feature thousands of respondents, and rank EW as their favorite expansion (I can link those, too, if you like).

See, here's the difference. People pointing out that EW and the Scions are popular have a huge mountain of evidence to draw from supporting how many people really feel that way. People claiming "many" whatever in disagreement have nothing real to cite. The best we see is someone citing the one thread on here, ignoring that it's the same people posting over and over again and ignoring that a considerable portion of those posts are people praising the game and the Scions.

He is unironically my fave single player entry protagonist, followed by Cloud. Granted I haven't played some of the older ones, but I doubt Bartz is going to sway me.

Yes, same here. The above-mentioned characters don't really rise to the level of attracting such a visceral emotion as "hate" from me. I just find them a bit bland.

I didn't mind the cast in FF8. They acted like people I knew IRL.

Except Rinoa. Rinoa is the worst female character in the entire franchise. She does nothing but stupid crap all game when she's not just flirting with Squall obsessively, and yet the story will push her at us all the time like we're supposed to care about her.

The funny part is she started to become likeable when her and Squall went for a walk down Horizon's Bridge. :^)
