I haven't played the game anytime recently, but I did try it twice. Both years from each other. I didn't make it to level 10 either time. Game was FAR too generic. Meaning it was exactly like every other mmo I had ever played upto that point, which was a ton.

I tried WoW a while back. It can be fun with friends but the game is so scuffed and contingent on dailies it'll make you sick. And given the companies poor standards and fake virtue signaling(and pointless censorship) coupled with a lack of native controller support it just ain't for me.

And they really have a big problem with overreliance on gimmicks and borrowed power.

I tried WoW in Legion. Mostly all I did was PvP. I don't know how PvP is now on there, but I preferred FFXIV overall even back then, and from what I hear about WoW, it has only gone downhill from there.

The only mmorpgs aside from FFXIV I would recommend (currently out), maybe GW2 or ESO, supposedly SWTOR is still going. SWTOR could be nice if someone wants to play story. ESO has a terrible cash shop, and it really hampers the experience, plus I have heard PvP is very very laggy, PvE might be okay. GW2 is a nice little relaxing game mostly, kind of boring for me, but it's not a bad game. At least last time I played it.

PvP in Legion was fun, and they provided some pretty decent incentives for players of all skill levels to do it. The newly added Demon Hunter was what I used most, though I had (well, wanted) to do it on my other characters for the artifact appearances. That's probably the last time I actually enjoyed PvP at all. The only real "rush" I've gotten since then was declaring war on others in War Mode with a group of hunters on the Timeless Isle when I was trying to get a pet tame. lol Many people learned what hunter justice was that day.

Yeah, I played some with Demon Hunter, and a free boosted paladin, hunter too, priest, shaman - I did a lot of lowbies. That's probably the last time I have enjoyed mmorpg PvP in any game. I kind of miss PvP. Still, I didn't think it was enough to justify spending sub money on it, to be honest. Not that I'd really want to have an ongoing sub for two games. Probably a good thing I got out early. I have heard some people say Legion was the last "good" expansion.

It was definitely the last time I actually enjoyed the game.

Ok...setting aside the sexual harassment from management, and the toxic culture, both of which are supposedly being worked on...

The Trial version of the game won't take long to get through, and will get you to level 20. Unfortunately, level 20 isn't very far, but will give you time to get used to the questing system, the keybinds, the UI, and, more importantly, the general feel of the game. It's actually very similar to FF in that regard. The art is more cartoony, but it grows on you.

Based on the original post, you want to play a Warlock. They are the class of spellcasters with DoTs. Feral druids are your choice for melee chars with DoTs (bleeds).

One thing you'll notice pretty quickly is how little instancing there is. You can pretty much get through the entire intro scenario, without ever having to wait for a loading screen once you're in. WoW flows.

The other thing you'll notice is that if you want to try a different class, you'll have to create a new character. You can send a lot of stuff between your characters, although not character progress stuff (reputation, etc), which is part of the time sink people have trouble with.

As for people complaining about WoW, I feel most of those issues are overblown. It's totally possible to have a good time playing without feeling like WoW is a job, that you have to keep playing at every moment. And there is a lot of good story, and a lot of fun places to explore. The plots don't hang together the way FF does, but that's because the plot is the main focus of FF.

Anyway, I guess I'm saying "Don't let the naysayers here keep you from trying WoW. There's a reason it's still around after 17 years, and with more players than most others out there."

If you like PvE, WoW is 'bashing your head against a concrete wall' simulator.

If you like PvP, WoW is 'bashing your head against a brick wall' simulator.

If you like exploration, WoW is 'bashing your head against drywall' simulator.

If you like story, WoW is 'washing your face with barbed wire' simulator.

The only decent thing about WoW is the class design, and even then some come up rather short.

If you want to try another MMO try SWTOR. Its got a ton of story content and you wont be supporting the cesspool of blizzard.
