Chainsaw being a 3-stage melee combo would be neat!
    1: jump in
    2: chainsaw spinning attack
    3: rocket leap back

I love that Machinist finally feels like one with... machinery! Rather than just a gunner that uses a gadget here and there.

But could the actual functionality of the machinery not be nearly a copy of each other?

    Machinist is just Edgar Figaro.

All the new tools you get are Tools he had/invented. Their still isn't a pure gun job in the game. MCH is more a mix.

I was really hoping MCH would finally get a movement skill since Bard has Repelling Shot to disengage and Dancer En Avant to dash forward. Naturally that means MCH should get an oGCD Grappling Hook to Gap Close. That gap closer could trigger the use of Chain Saw as a player based circular AoE. Dancer already got a Line AoE GCD with Starfall Dance so the current Chain Saw feels like copied homework. A gap closer with 2 Charges on a 60 second Recast that triggers the use of Chain Saw on the same button would make MCH feel very distinct and allow for insane burst.

Ive seen you reply stuff like this on multiple MCH threads, but I havent really seen you offer any ideas on how to "fix" mch. What would you suggest?

They would suggest playing Bard it seems:

    Character
    Jira Dal'riata
    World
    Lamia
    Main Class
    Bard Lv 90

I'm convinced that they were including themselves in their statement

How about something from a guy who played MCH to 80 and didn't really touch it afterward:

How about a perma buff that gives a stacking damage buff if you don't move, up to a significant amount (20%). +5% damage buff stack every GCD that you don't move during.

Not a MCH main by any stretch, but here's my thoughts:

The Automaton Queen is doing the stuff the MCH itself should be doing WITH the 'tools' they gain as they level. Thematically, the Queen looks cool (and it even has a reference to Front Mission with the little spin it does before using the Pilebunker, which for me is extremely niche and specific fanservice for all ten of us who have played Front Mission). But the fact that it's a "pet" in FFXIV doing something makes it somewhat inherently unsatisfying, on top of the fact the Queen has serious targeting issues that basically any real main of the job can attest to in excruciating detail.

Since MCH is now pretty firmly a "tool-user" that also happens to use guns on occasion, here's what I'd personally like to see (and I certainly don't expect everyone to agree with it).

    - Turn the Automaton Queen from some independent drone that will target the wrong thing on occasion to an exoskeleton of some sort. It should look rudimentary at first (like at most it maybe just enhances the damage of the 1-2-3, or is the REASON why we do the fancy flips or throw out the rockets). But as the job levels, the exoskeleton gets more advanced. It gets the flame thrower, the pile bunker (which should look like a modified Drill, for the ~Aesthetic~), then it gets the crowned collider mechanism on the arm that doesn't have the pile bunker. The point of this change would be to get all the fancy crap that the automaton does, but put in player control. To me, that just sounds more exciting than calling something on a timer down, then watching part of that timer drain down while it goes through its summoning animation. Maybe make the exoskeleton use the battery we've been charging as a resource in some way for the Big Attacks. Maybe it enhances all the other tools we've built as we've leveled. Someone with more of a mind for this stuff can work that out.

    - Scattergun -> Shotgun is the basic AoE combo, which can be enhanced with the auto crossbow/ricochet as meter is available. I just like the idea of using that old grease gun, then following it up with the big ol' shotty.

    - Turn chainsaw into a melee weapon. This one's controversial, obviously, but Edgar did it and he was pretty rad. In my smooth brain, I'd see it as part of a melee combo that extends as the job levels. Drill (which was a melee tool in FF6) -> Chain Saw. Maybe put something else in there at each expansion cap, some other tool.

-Flamethrower no longer requires standing still. I don't care how dangerous it is to run around with a flamethrower, we do that for five seconds and don't give a damn. We're already crazy machinists, why would we care about the dangers of running around with a flamethrower?

-Everything that doesn't spend heat/battery now generates it. I don't care if it doesn't make sense, figure it out, I either wanna do more with both meters, or just throw them out if they can't imagine anything more to do with them.

I know that this stuff is a big change to a lot of what MCH currently is, but the problem I have with current MCH is similar to the problem I have with current SMN: it's dull. It doesn't feel interesting. The thing that is supposed to be the job's "big" payoffs don't even have visual splendor to back them like SMN does. The current gauges don't interact in interesting ways with the job's various abilities or weapon skills. The pet wastes a not-insignificant part of its timer just showing up to the party, and can just decide to not be useful for some reason. And that's all on top of it doing crap damage as part of the tax it gets for being ranged and mobile.

That's a problem pets had with Devotion before and still have now with Searing Light (renamed Devotion) and the new shield ability. SMNs complained about it before and are complaining about it now too because we have now 2 abilities depeding on pet out on the field, the amount of time they are out now diminished and for the shield ability in particular it's too restrictive.

And yeah, current SMN gameplay is bland and too easy but with nice skill effects that hide those aspects for some time.
Being easy is different from certain behaviors turning skills impractical. Same case applies for Rekindle. No way in hell I'm gonna hold Phoenix to use Rekindle at the "right time". Would be a whole different story if Rekindle could be used on demand, not getting in the way of the rotation.

Sage have phlegma that is melee, why does it works? it's on a charge system: if a healer can have it I don't know why we can't.

And as an old Hw/sb mch main, i dont mind having to stand still for a channeling attack, especially if it's a 1 to 2 seconds like the old FT. As I often say, a lot of the "problems" of the old mch are just said by people that parrot what someone have said (like a lot of jobs still) or people that just tried a bit like the old SMN and gave up. Lack of flexibility and latency were the big problem due to rapidfire and overheat/wildfire's timer and Lynn did a lot of topics on it back then (which made yoship's "we didnt get any feedback" a sore spot for a lot of us). It's okay to have jobs that are niche and not played because of it, you are not supposed to like every jobs.

You can play the job the exact same from 58 to 90. Yes you wont be able to do your opener but does it changes anything to the overall core rotation: no it doesnt, I leveled my mch to 90 and i didn't feel like I got anything: scattergun could have been a trait upgrade of damage, 2 rea charges is only used in the opener, Drill 3 making it a 100 battery per loop making it less flexible but allowing a turret that will miss half the buff in the opener... where BS could have just given 50 battery when out of combat like chakra, and i'm not talking about tactician on 90sec.

Pretty sure I stated many ideas dating back to 4.1 but I think I’m getting this forum confused with others
