I thought the amount of bonus experience is based on how many first timers are in the duty.Something I've noticed. When I get thrown into Praetorium via the Duty Roulette, sometimes I will gain a full level. Sometimes I overlevel. Or, like just 10 minutes, I get 60% of a level. And no it's nothing to do with whether my role was in need when I queued. Or my level. I'm in the level 80 range, and I've had runs on other jobs where my role wasn't needed and still gained a full level. This time I was tanking and tanks were in need. Still got barely any experience.
What is the point of doing this roulette if I can't be certain whether or not I will get more exp than a regular dungeon? Especially considering I get near insta-ques for anything as a tank. It's bad enough that the roulette exp overall (not just MSQ) is pretty weak, but for it to be inconsistent is just making me not want to do it and just dungeon spam and run fate trains.
If anything the duty roulette should tell me the exact amount of exp I will get. I'm tired of sometimes getting good exp and sometimes getting crap, especially with an instance that's 45 minutes long and 70% unskippable cutscenes. I just don't understand what the reason for the inconsistent exp is.

Hai! I'm Vahl, in ur mmorpgs, sort'n my inventory and putt'n 2 many H's in my name since FFXI..FFXIV Inventory Tetris Champ

I think it's because Castrum is considerably shorter than Praetorium, which has faaar more unskipable cutscenes. So they had it give less xp.
And that's the BASE xp, before all the unrelated bonuses of all sorts and colors and flavors everybody in the thread keep mentioning.
Weirdly, Castrum needs more "skill", in the run to the ceruleum tanks, the ceruleum tanks, the run to the cannons, and the to platforms and two big guys bit before Lydia. All that trash being dealt with should buff the XP reward more on the bosses more.
Prae is a lot more tank and spank after the first two dashs.
(yeah I put "" around skill, we over level it by a mile still)

I think the deciding factor for the xp is not """difficulty""" but "how long it takes". How many runs you can do of one dungeon vs the other in a given time.Weirdly, Castrum needs more "skill", in the run to the ceruleum tanks, the ceruleum tanks, the run to the cannons, and the to platforms and two big guys bit before Lydia. Yes, indeed. However trash used to give XP. And there is a lot, lot more trash in there. I feel the XP isn't correct for the extra work, even if the time is less. I've seen a lot of fishing for Prae, and that has to be impacting the first-time-runners.
However, 90 isn't hard to reach, and the XP is moot once you are there. The tomes are more important.

A LOT of that trash is avoidable or mass killable if people wouldn't just.. Run. Nobody stops at the first cannons anymore, everyone pulls that very first blob of guards that GO AWAY ONCE YOU TRIGGER THE LIGHTS. HEAVEN HELP ME WHEN PEOPLE PULL THE LAST PACK OF COLOSSI!Yes, indeed. However trash used to give XP. And there is a lot, lot more trash in there. I'M NOT BITTER YOU'RE BITTER!

Because there's too many factors to take into account:
- Did you have first timers?
- Were you wearing Memphina's Earring?
- Did you complete a challenge log on top that stealthily gave you the boost to get the full level?
- Was your class in need?
- Did you get Prae or Castrum?
- Did you join a party in progress and missed out on a boss (or previously also trash) experience?
So yeah: It is not consistent because the amount of experience changes based on a lot of unpredictable factors. Nothing new really, it's been like this for years. The only consistent thing is the very base XP you get for the roulette itself, but that's never applied by itself in a vacuum.

Well as people pointed out there are MANY variables that might have netted you more xp but without seeing you exact cercumstance we can only splitball reasons to you. no matter how you cut it its damn good xp either way. I personally get VERY disappointed when i get castrum. Preatorium for life
I feel this.
Ran prae at 89 on my mch, he had like 5-10% exp into level. Finish the run and he just flat out levels to 90. I was bewildered as I never thought it gave that much. There was no challenge done, no adventurer in need.
Ran it again on my paladin at like 82-83, and it just gave me around 60% of a level, it does feel very random
