To be fair, it's a combination of different factors. Perhaps most importantly, the servers simply aren't able to handle the player load they were faced with. A lot of people are stuck at home with more free time than expected and so MMO's are making a bit of a comeback as a consequence. WoW has also been infused with controversy after controversy for a while and a lot of people decided to quit and find something else to play. However, GW2 and ESO have also been seeing renewed interest and they have been around for about as long as FFXIV has.

Even with WoW's decline, though, FFXIV is seeing more popularity but it hasn't reached the same numbers as WoW during its 'golden era' nor is it likely to do so with the insistence on playing it safe at every possible turn.

I do think FFXIV is the best option on the market at the moment, but that isn't saying much given the competition.
