Suggestion for a future GNB move

    Hey everyone,

As a played GNB during Endwalker, I've come to think about a new finishing move that would more or less comes instead of double down.

Even If I liked double down, it can be more original, so my idea was to make it a line aoe instead of plain aoe that you can cast if you don't have any cartridges or can make it an instant standard weapon skill if you have one, or an ogcd if you have two, with some potencies differences between each variation.

I think it would add more versatility during dungeons or even raids, I'm not game designer or anything so there is plenty that could be wrong in my idea though.

There are unfortunately several issues with this idea simply due to how combat in XIV works.

Making Double Down a line aoe with a cast time is already pointless as it will never be used.

Double Down's 60 second cooldown means it naturally aligns with your No Mercy, meaning you only want to use it during said window so it benefits from the 20% damage buff, 1200 potency is simply too much to not use it inside your burst window. This also means that you will always be in melee range when you execute Double Down, since you need to be there for the rest of your burst.

In GnB's current rotation Double Down is always followed by weaving 2 oGCDs, either Blasting Zone+Bow Shock or Rough Divide+Bloodfest.

If you were to cast Double Down then you could not weave any oGCDs, most likely causing issues in your rotation.

Another issue would be that during the cast you can neither parry nor dodge any attacks, something that was already a problem on Paladin during SB when you still had to hardcast Holy Spirit and couldn't block any attacks during it, though not quite as severe on GnB it is still not ideal on a tank.

The next issue is that you really only want to go into your No Mercy with 3 cartridges to maximize the damage you get out of the buff. Since you don't want to enter No Mercy without 3 cartridges this also means that neither the "no cartridges" nor the "1 cartridge" version of Double Down will see any use, making 2/3 of the ability already obsolete.

Turning into into an oGCD at 2 cartridges only exacerbates an issue that GnB already has to deal with, too many oGCD weaves during your burst, adding 1 more oGCD and at the same time removing a GCD to weave said oGCDs is anything but ideal.

And lastly the variation in potency, probably the biggest issue.

Gameplay in XIV revolves heavily around dealing damage, be it as an actual dps, a tank or a healer, dealing more damage means the boss dies faster and there is less room for error on any mechanics (since the boss can't do any mechanics when they're dead), less incoming damage (since the boss can't hurt you if they're dead) and you won't simply fail the boss' enrage timer.
If Double Down has varying potency depending on how many cartridges you have then only the version that deals the highest amount of damage will be used, making 2/3 versions even more obsolete.

A few of these issues however are under the assumption that more cartridges = more Double Down potency.

It's not actually. It's Renzokuken. Nice try though.

I know...I kinda hope it gets upgraded to looking like Lion Heart next expansion, it'd be so awesome.

It probably will. We have a nice blend of Seifer and Squall. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up being able to cntinuation after every GCD including our main combo for constant oGCD attacks to mimic the Trigger mechanic from FFVIII.

That will placebo the feel of Lionheart or Lionheart will be a triple cartridge finisher after the end of Gnashing Fang.

Though a Phantom Flurry type attack like BLU has might fit Lionheart better as a short channel you activate again as a finisher.

Wow thank you very much for your response, I learn quite a few things reading this !

Yeah I thought about this only focusing on the cool aspect, but I definitely didn't go in that much depth, that said I see why it would highly impractical.

Again ty for answering my thoughts !
