    In short, I don't think SE can afford to part ways with paying customers. Whether they be legit or cheaters.

    Agreed, and since this is still technically beta-stage FFXIV letting the bots/exploiters run rampant allows them to study their habits find ways to prevent their behavior and patch 2.0 ahead of time. Sure I bet we'll see them find new ways to exploit the system, but SE will have their names and know who they are they can update the client to prevent every new instance of cheating because they're not trying to find every new bot/gil-seller that's created post ban.
