I honestly wasn't sure what kind of answers I was expecting from the lore forums, but it turns out that at least some of this makes sense, I'm impressed. But yeah, the logical answer is that it just is his superpowered mode that he just triggers because. But a lore-friendly answer of the gilded magitek armour, and/or glamour prisms actually kinda works haha

The friendliest lore answer is found in Zenos and the Ghimlyt Dark bosses and all other variants of Garleans with Magitek Body Armor. The suit manipulates aether for them, and as we learn in the Gemstone Weapons questline these same suits provide technical readouts of their wearers' combat techniques.

Of course, Zenos is a little murkier because he's Resonant at the time we fight him in Yanxia/Ala Mhigo, but the Soranus Sisters in Ghimlyt Dark aren't as far as I know. Their suits have powerful auras that match the color of their suits.

Gaius's just turns gold, because at the time that was the coolest visual effect they came up with. The Gilded Magitek mount description pertains to the mineral itself, which that mount is gold all of the time. Gaius's suit on the other hand is only gold when he turns it on, and turns off when its power/Ceruleum is expended.

TL;DR - Garleans made some dope ass Ironman suits, more or less. I'm surprised one hasn't had a jetpack yet.
