Dear WoW refugees and returning players

May I suggest you use the Trust system when doing a dungeon for the first time? May I suggest that you please queue in duty finder once you actually understand the mechanics.

I do not know how the average skill level in Duty Finder has decreased by 80% over the past few weeks but I guess anything is possible!!!

That's why WoW was so toxic though, because everybody expected you to know a dungeon inside, out, backwards and sideways before you even did it for the first time. I for one am happy to learn alongside new players and help them figure things out. Obviously there's a line to be drawn about griefing but I think you should be able to go in blind without being ridiculed and bullied for it.

Maybe by the time one were doing it on the 3rd level of difficulty (Mythic 0), but after dungeon-leveling some dozen alts I still have yet to see more than a few people get offended over someone in their party not knowing the intricacies of a dungeon that they may have been seeing for the first time, but even that was mostly because the someone in question was attempting to run through everything with blinders on, at the party's expense. (Once in Halls of Atonement, needlessly pulling literally everything despite being asked to follow, once in Tirna, by repeatedly running into maze walls and sending everyone back to the checkpoint despite being asked to follow the clues, and once in Slag Mines for having taken the long way around when the rest of the party had already started down the normal path.)

Do they get pissed at people pulling patrols that were long since visible? Sure. For never interrupting casts? Yep. For aiming cleaves into the party? Of course. For standing in telegraphed AoEs? Yes. But that's precisely because they're far from new or intricate concepts. The basic expectation for people new to a dungeon is to follow the others' lead and not forget the basics.

(If the remaining four people explain, target-mark, and waypoint exactly what you should do after your having repeatedly failed a mechanic despite earlier guidance, they will expect that you follow said advice or at least not die far enough away not to PK them, though, toxic as that may be.)

Frankly, one's at least likely to pick up that kind of flak here as there. It's not so different a boogieman.

    This is spot on.

One of the best things about ffxiv from my experience is how friendly, forgiving, and helpful the community is towards new players.
Especially sprouts doing content blind or for the first time.
It was almost a culture shock after coming from WoW.

Trying to gatekeep DF, and flaming newer players is not a good path to go down.

Perhaps this is left over from my WoW days, but I will not run a dungeon or raid until I've watched all the video guides available several times.
This time around, I just ran all the MSQ dungeons with trusts to get them done quickly, following the moves of the NPC's to stay out of the bad stuff.

WHile you are being sarcastic, the "You dont pay my sub" defense is more common than you think.

Just last night i did my Expert Roulette as Sage and landed in the 90 MSQ dungeon. 6 minute elapse, standing at the first boss (A very common occurence).
All 3 members of the party failed mechanics over and over, which caused me no small amount of stress keeping them alive.
On the second boss, the Reaper was offered a tip on upcoming mechanics of the boss to watch out for and was told "Chill i wanna do this totally blind"
And proceeded to mess up mechanic after mechanic.

On the final boss, he managed to get Doomed 3 times, drawing ALL of my resources to keep him alive while the other 2 continued to fail mechanics, leading to all 3 of them being dead at one point.
The Reaper demanding to do a blind run directly led to the Tank's death, which in turn led to the other DPS being killed by the boss when the Tank went down.

To that Reaper and ALL others who proclaim "You dont pay my sub"
This is a god damn team game. If you're unwilling to work as a team, don't force your poor decisions onto people who have to deal with the mess you create due to your inability to play nicely with a group.

Trust is perfect for doing blind runs where available. Dont make other people miserable for your own selfish reasons.

Trust NPCs in dungeons execute all mechanics properly outside of some scripted "accidents" due to AI personality quirks.
You can quite literally just follow the NPCs around for the whole fight and win even without understanding the reason why the NPCs are doing what they're doing.
The NPCs literally guide you through the mechanics. There is no reason for someone to fail endlessly in a Trust run outside of a sheer refusal to take notice of their surroundings.

Honestly at that point I'd just leave the reaper dead lmao
Being new and learning is one thing, but after a certain point the dude who's dying to every other mechanic stops being worth the resources to raise. If the group can clear without them they can take the time on the ground to watch and learn the fight, cause if it's that bad it'll probably be faster to just 3 man it than to keep throwing bodies at the boss and possibly (probably) wipe again.
