Despite this constantly being tossed around. This isn't actually why so many people despise combo consolidation. Most simply prefer to press different buttons on their respective peripherals than mash 1111212221 (DRG's new button sequence). Furthermore, the follow up notion that consolidating combos will lead to several new abilities taking their place has zero evidence. Quite the contrary when SE has seemingly gone out of their way to simplify everything. With that precedent set, what likelihood is their we'll see those five buttons on DRG replaced with anything? Pretty much non-existent. Instead, we're not just using less buttons—which people simply don't like.
The issue with it even being made optional is it won't be after a given while once too many new abilities are added and none pruned away. Therefore, people who don't want to have their combos consolidated will simply run out of room and be forced into a system they dislike. We're already seeing this problem with jobs like Samurai and Astro. Speaking of which, both those jobs have completely pointless button bloat. Samurai has four abilities that are exactly the same except one is Single Target; the other AoE. They even added another one in Shoha II. At least combo buttons are actually used. Abilities like the aforementioned Shoha II or Guren will go entire Savage tiers without ever seeing the light of day.
You then have Astro which has two separate card buttons when past iterations, specifically HW, merely changed into the card itself. All to mostly accommodate players who couldn't be bothered to play their cards every 30 seconds and complained about it.
