Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.
For anyone who thinks this hasn't been happening for years - even before the term "NFT" was coined - I present this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RobloxI posted this in the other thread on this topic. But I'll just repost it here too
"The route I see them going is starting an addon store for the game. Where people/other companies can make glam items or emotes and sell them as NFT's to other players. So lets say the creator makes 1000 of a really cool glam set. The item sell's out, and now other people are willing to spend a fortune to buy the glam set off other players. Meanwhile Square will sit back and charge lets say a 5% fee on each transaction of said outfit.
This creation process would also allow them to approve or disapprove of what would be allowed. As I know they wouldn't let it turn into a free for all.
But that will be the beginning of the end for the game. And most people I honestly believe would be ok with it to start with. The argument would be that you are supporting creators/modders by allowing them to sell their work in a legit manner.
People just dont understand the madhouse it will devolve into. You already have plenty of people upset with just the mogstation. Wait till they see $1000+ NFT outfits or emotes lmao"

You captured my feelings on the matter perfectly. I don't want to "play to earn". That's what I go to work for. I just want to be a scrub who "plays for fun" because that's what a video game is supposed to be. If they came into the game I would also have to seriously reconsider my sub (a sub that hasn't dropped a single time since 2.0 release I would like to add).
CBU3 genuinely care about their players and I trust that the FFXIV dev team is probably against the idea. If NFTs do happen it will be because corporate forced them through.
Oh for sure, which makes it all the more hilarious because attaching an NFT to the item is completely pointless. But they would do it to add more "value" and "legitimatize" it as a real thing. And people will buy into it. The NFT crowd for the most part are either cult members or scam artist's. I'm not saying NFT's cant have a use. But in something like FFXIV, it has zero legitimate use outside trying to funnel more money out of players. For anyone who thinks this hasn't been happening for years - even before the term "NFT" was coined - I present this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roblox

But yeah its why I stay as far away from something like Roblox. And that's what this fool of a president wants to turn his games into. Because they do make a ton of money atm

SE makes the most money on mobile games because they have so many running for years, not the MMO or 'HD games' segments. With the argument that people will put 'lots of quarters' into a mobile game to get shortcuts and cosmetics it's not unrealistic for SE CEO to see this as an avenue for further growth. There is a segment of people who will pay for one-of-a-kind assets, imagine characters/skins/armor only you have in FFBE or even XIV kind of things.
There is also contribute to make assets that's happening today. I'm sure they know very well mods are a thing in XIV, and people actually 'pay' for commissions, want to bet they won't try to cash-in via the NFT route?
Crypto uses like 10% of the power that banking industry uses, although each transaction uses more energy than a Visa card swipe because of capita of resources so it's almost a hard argument to make. There is also the avenue that less than half of farming uses renewable energy. The industry should move faster towards it, even if it means send retiring crypto equipment to solar 'farms'. There needs to be movement towards renewables. Still doesn't solve chipset shortages, and driving up costs on customer-level PC electronics like GPUs. The rage is warranted in some sense, but it's also a correctable with time.
Yeah, here's the thing: even if you "play to earn", you ALSO should have fun. Otherwise, you'll never be able to relate to your customer and you should go work somewhere else. So, even if there are people that "play to earn" (or "play to contribute", as the guy said in the letter), this segregation makes no sense. You captured my feelings on the matter perfectly. I will immediately cancel my FFXIV sub if I catch even a whiff of NFTs near it, and I won't be coming back ever again, even if they completely reverse the policy. I may not even buy another SE product ever again. This phenomenon is the most profound form of disrespect of gamers, and a level of vulture-like behavior that makes even microtransactions seem benevolent. If it becomes part of every video game one day, I will stop playing video games, full stop.
I think I can agree with people and say if I see an FFXIV Bored Ape NFT i'm hitting the kill switch.
