Some grammar concerns in the game

I realized that when I use Return skill, it shoes "You Ready Return" text in
the chat. I wonder if this phrase has grammar issue... And I am trying to address this problem generally, I don't know if that makes sense because my English is not that good as well, but when I am playing the game, a lot of messages popped up upon using skills, actions, etc. tend to have few grammar issues here and there, I know it isn't a major problem, but are they going to be fixed or it is ok...? It does not affect overall gameplay though.

The phrase “You ready Return” isn’t a grammatical error; it’s regular present tense of (pro)noun - verb - object.

It’s the same as “You ready (the spell) Return”, with the part in parentheses omitted. “The spell” is just implied, and therefore omitted; which is fairly common in English.


As for your other concerns; I have to see examples. FFXIV uses a lot of Ye Olde English speak, so words and phrases that sound odd even to native speakers aren’t all that odd, since the localization team is going for a sort of archaic feel.

Uses theatrical English, not actual everyday old English.

All are maybe a touch archaic, but all are completely correct.

There really are few grammatical errors outside of the recent "To better facilitate the login process, they display of character information has been simplified" message at the login screen.



If you do see something that seems incorrect, it's more likely to be your understanding of English.

If English isn't your native tongue I can understand why it can seem like there are grammatical errors. The truth is there are very few. I can't even remember the last time I saw one. As others have mentioned before FFXIV uses a lot of old English. Those who grow up in English speaking countries typically study Shakespeare at school so they are very aware that old English can be quite different to modern English.

As for "Return" that is the name of the ability. "You ready Return" is the same as "You ready <ability name>". When you know what Return means in that context it is grammatically correct.

I’m aware. Old English (and even Middle English) would be unrecognizable to any native English speaker nowadays that isn’t trained to read it. That said, I’d call it more archaic English rather than theatrical. “Ye Olde English speak” is more or less slang for archaic English words. Not literal Old English.

There are a few, such as who vs. whom constructions, but it's mostly artificial Elizabethan English.
