I typed too much for 1 post. Here's the last thing that angers me about the description. In every single other language the description is along the line of this: "A magical doll modeled after Moenbryda. It seems that Urianger had made it alone in secret to sort through the feelings he only realized once she was lost. The gentle look on her face is likely meant to imitate the face she showed him". So they got rid of everything sweet and loving about the description --recreating her gentle expression, and his sadness over her loss-- to be replaced with 'anatomically correct'. They make sure to leave in that it was created by Urianger and 'what he did with it is best left unsaid'. For what reason? We all know the reason.

This is what really bugs me about it too. It's not just the innuendo but the loss of the text emphasising his feelings and the effect that her death has on him. It takes away something quiet and emotional and replaces it with a cheap "ew, gross" reaction.

    mild Endwalker spoilers I guess?

I recently made a statement about this one on Twitter, and I completely agree. For me, this description was a slow burn hate for me. When I first saw it, Urianger's character had only gotten a little bit of development (warriors of darkness and minfilia thing had just happened) so I remember finding it kinda funny and thinking "LOL they're really trying to go there huh? But I'll just assume he cried like a baby over it" and I left it at that for a time. Then came more character development for Urianger... a heavy amount of it, and he became literally my most beloved character in the game EASILY. There's no way this man that's like the embodiment of kindness would ever do anything even close to what that description implies.... so I got more annoyed at it. But that's not where it ends

This game has been building a beautiful narrative of Moenbryda and Urianger's friendship/love this entire time. He always mentioned her at least 1-2 times in each expansion if you took the care to talk to him between quests and things...and then Endwalker came at us and tackled our feels with THAT SCENE. If you know, you know. It's so sweet, and pure.... --and then there's that minion description that's like an ugly tarnish on the entire thing. I try to forget it exists, but every time I look at the minion I see it. Every time a streamer gets to that part of the game and gets Moenbryda minion I see half their chatroom going "LOL check the description!" because they KNOW it's meant to sound disgusting. I see posts on Twitter all the time about it. It's surprising how many people legitimately believe that description is cannon and definitely took it the perverted way.

I'm sure people are thinking "you're just butthurt because it's your favorite character!" Heh... you'd be surprised the crazy things about Urianger I will like and retweet on Twitter because I think they're funny. People calling him a slut or whore because his ankles showed for instance. They're clearly jokes, but the difference between those things is they are online in a space with fans. That content is not on an official item description in the game. That description makes people actually think my favorite character is a creep. I can't just tell them "No, Urianger never made a Moenbryda sex toy, only a cute little minion doll" because they can literally respond with "He did! Just check the description" and that's not cool to me. So there you have it. An item description I thought was kinda funny at first is actually now extremely loathed by me to the point I want it changed.

Not really about the translation, but an additional lore-thought on the doll itself (as recounted by the Japanese version) - photos don't seem to exist in Eorzea so the only way you can record the image of a person is through art, so making the doll would be a real important thing of recalling that memory of her face and trying to capture it. Particularly since her sacrifice meant she just dissolved entirely into aether with no body left behind.

I just wanted to update this thread with a heartfelt thank you to the localisation team. It means the world to know that we are heard, and that our concerns (be they voiced here or on other social media sites) are taken into account. The change in the Wind-Up Moenbryda’s description is beautifully done and covers every concern we’ve mentioned both here and elsewhere.

For those wondering, the new description reads:

This finely detailed tribute to Moenbryda was crafted in secret by none other than Urianger following the untimely passing of his beloved companion. Though known for her warm and jovial nature, the resolve within this doll’s eyes perhaps speaks to the strength he admired.
Thank you so much again to the localisation team!
