Clear back in 2.0 we already saw how tying positionals to something this important pans out clear back in 2.0 when Heavy Thrust's buff and Chaos Thrust's DoT on Dragoon were tied to the positional requirement instead of it just being potency. That got removed because it was infuriating rather than fun and this would be like that but a thousand times more infuriating. Positionals work as a supplementary mechanic, they improve on an otherwise well designed job by giving you slightly more space to improve your play and they make the job a little more active when you're outside of your burst.

I get that people are unhappy about the lost positionals, I am too, but this is overcorrecting.
This 100%. Positionals are not a magic solution that makes the glaring issues that Monk kit currently has dissapear.
