I did the Tank one, then when it became obvious they were a bunch of nothing filler quests I cutscene skipped the other ones, which made them a lot more enjoyable. They really feel like a last minute addition out of obligation since we are not getting Job quests ever again.

The worst part is that it's very blatantly obvious they are trying to recreate the beats of the ShB role quests but fail absolutely because I really couldn't care less about an emo elf clone with an identity crisis.

So far I've done 3 of the questlines.

    Personal opinions
Magic DPS: Main point of the story is the reform of the church and its place in a new Ishgard. The blashemy is a minor point in the story, mostly there to have something to go against. Haven't we already had quests with the curch and how it's chainging with the war ending? It felt like retreading old grounds. Nothing in it really seems to say magic DPS, could just as easily have been ranged or melee. Everything in the mystery is shown through the Echo.
Healer: Does deal more with new material in the Silver Griffins, although the healer-side is very limited. It's a nice round-off of the conflict between the Ala Mhigan people from both sides of the conflict. Just kinda odd we spend time preparing for a ceremony, but our character isn't invited.
Tank: Didn't start in Gridania, so I have no idea if anything in the quest is old or newly created for this quest. Seems to be more of a Kan-E story than anything else. Only tanking was in the last fight because I guess they had to have something to tank. Do like the Yuna-dance, please let us have it for WHM LB3.

Overall I don't see much role in the role-quests, they could rather easily have been standard quests to fill out older parts of the story.

They make a bit more sense if you think about the jobs in each city.

Gridania has healer and DPS guilds, but no tanks.
Limsa has tank and caster/healer guilds, but no public melee. (The Rogue's Guild is an "open secret", everyone knows about it, but they're not officially acknowledged.)
Ul'dah has tank, melee, and magic guilds, but no healers.
Ishgard has dragoons, knights (and dark knights, unofficially), and astrologians, but no casters.
Doma gets the leftovers, I guess.

I've done 3 of them so far. They have tiny bits of information in them but mostly they are forgettable. The only useful thing I learned from all 3 was from the caster one where they state that primals retain the memories of their past summons. Meaning that it can be used as a vehicle to bring some past enemies or allies back into the story. The rest of them were fluff. The melee dps one gave a tiny bit of information about Melwyboobs histroy and I actually forgot almost everything about the ranged dps one except that it was in Doma. So yeah, not impressed.

It was overall really weird, I am on my way to do the last one, leveling my bard right now. The tank one does make sense, you are basically Kan-E-Senna's bodyguard, the healer one has only one time you actually heal someone, but otherwise you are a glorified DPS, magic DPS had nothing to do with you being a mage. I mean, the emissary even say that the reason why they need a mage is because a battle-mage COULD be useful, everything that happens in the storyline could have been done by any other job, unlike ShB ones that even specified how useful it would be someone that understood and could easily manipulate aether to face one of the cardinal sins. The melee one is by far my favorite but same issue, no real reason as to why you are a melee DPS there.

The stories in general were fine in the three I did so far but none of them made me feel like my role was important to the story.

Head Graze isn't what makes physical ranged DPS feel like physical ranged DPS.

The standard "Aiding" mechanic we see in so many quests doesn't make a healer feel like a healer.

The final quest for the tanks did a good job of making you feel like a tank but the other quests in the chain weren't relevant to being a tank at all.

I've still got to level up a couple of more jobs to see the last two.

I can understand why SE wanted to shift from making 19 different job quest chains to making just 5 role quest chains but there's not much point if those chains do a poor job of demonstrating what makes each role unique.

Are you missing the Job Specific quests? I think the logic of doing away with them was that at SOME point its gets hard to find "masters" better at our job than the PC, who at level 80-90 is already god tier.

    You're not wrong.

I did sort of wonder why, for instance the Tank quest took me to Gridania, then I figured it was likely because that "Npc" needed a tanky person to go along with her "healing"?

*shrug* the Role Quests have been somewhat lack luster since introduced. I agree, I do miss the Job specific quests with the specific job related lore.
I don't think the Job quests need to stay out for that reason... While you're right in mentioning the thing about beind hard to find new masters, they can always go towards a more collaborative route with the NPCs.

Truth be told, what I liked the most about the early job quests is that you actually get to delve into their lore a lot and that's important since jobs are how we portray our WoLs. I wish they would make a comeback for that reason alone, but the writing need to have that intention regardless. From the recent jobs added ever since ShB (I didn't do RPR yet), Dancer is the most rich under that scope because is purely centered around what means to be a Dancer, whereas for Gunbreaker and Sage it sort of feels like a very side thing, even though the narrative of those quests is quite good.

The actual downside is that would get too onerous for the writing team to have a set of quests for EVERY job, given the fact that the roster just increases as time goes on. But maybe they could just do one single quest that has a lenthy chain and a single player trial to unlock future relic sets or artifact weapons?

Yeah I'm working on the 2nd last one now (p. ranged) and then I have tank left. None of them have been interesting or well done. Should have added more time to battle content or MSQ instead.

My particular issue is that your role is so obviously irrelevant to the quest’s respective plots that technically with minor tweaks to scripted scenes you could play any job and the story is likely to still make complete sense.
