It's one thing to create characters, make you love them, give them death flags and watch them die.
It's an entirely new form of cruel abuse for the story-lover to create characters, make you love them WHILE KNOWING THEY DIE AND YOU CAN'T SAVE THEM.
Emet's group I get it, it was great to pal around with him and Hythlo and Venat, ....tell them their future of dying to cause tearjerking sentimentality and know you can't save them, and then see them off one more time. Everyone wanted to know about them.
BUT NOW we get part 2 of that. Elidibus who a lot of people felt sorry for but didn't really like now becomes your best buddy! Then we got Lahabrea's son to add to the mix and let's give the giant reminder THESE ARE DEAD CHARACTERS, these are characters you know die, in a time you can't save. But you know what Square is going to do?
Make them super lovable, well developed, and realistic like your own best friend.
...so it hurts even worse when the quest chain is over and 'that's the end.'
You know because they're already dead.
