In Japanese it's ギル. So, like "gill". "Jill" would be ジル or something.
Gil but never gills.
Gil: guh ill, as in Gilded or Gilt, because it represents Gold.

yep, definately Gil as in gill of a fish
FUN FACT: a GIL is an actual unit of measure in the Imperial System of weights and measures, 1 Gil = 1/8 of a cup or 1 fl oz! used predominately by the Royal Navy, 1 Gil was the official measurement used for a sailor's Rum ration!
