CHI and other long FATE timers

It was the same when Ixion was new to everyone in Stormblood. People that wanted the mount right away camped it. If you want the mount sooner rather than later you make the decision to wait out the spawn. For me it's not worth sitting for hours on end for a mount that will be old news in a month and hardly ever used.

Yeah, special fates just aren't worth it. With my RNG luck, Chi will always spawn in the middle of the night or when I'm at work. Never when I'm actually camping him.

Honestly, the only good thing is that you can grind other fates while waiting, by mount vouchers and sell them for cash.

The special fates are really WoW levels of wasted time that you'll never get back.

You absolutely don't need to camp Chi. You certainly don't need to camp it for 9 hours. That's your choice and you've no one to blame but yourself if you do.

I have the mount. The first kill I camped it for like half an hour because I saw it was nearly at its upper limit on spawn time. The second kill I just teleported in when it was notified being up. Sure congestion makes that difficult to do atm, but as people get their mounts and as others stop playing altogether you'll find the congestion will clear right up.

To this day people still kill the likes of Odin, Ixion, Courlregina and Formidable when they spawn. Chi will be the same. You won't miss out. Just keep doing what you like doing to enjoy the game. Get the report Chi is up? Great, try for it. Missed it? Oh well, there's always next time! That special fate isn't going away, after all!

Sitting there hours on end on a spawn that isn't even guaranteed to happen is a fast way of ruining the game for yourself, and it's entirely your fault if you do.

... What fate are you even trying to attempt?
Try looking for either a Discord server or a linkshell that keeps track of special fate timers and maybe a website that does it for your data center. Then focus on more then one server. By now Chi and David both last long enough that you can go to a city, travel to the server, get to the area, join a party, and get gold credit before it dies. Heck, people even WAIT now to pull lol.

For Zodiark, it was last up on Thursday at about 2:30pm GMT.

Respawn timer is 36-72 hours, and it's close to cap so it should be spawning very soon. It's RNG that this time it's going to spawn closer to the end of the spawn window than the beginning.

The big FATEs are intended to be rare. The design is fine as you have an entire expansion to do them. There's no need to put your health at risk for something that isn't going to be removed from the game.

As Infindox said, join one of the multiple cross world linkshells or Discord servers that share FATE information so if you miss the FATE spawning on your own world, you can use world visit to get to it on another.

There are also several online hunt/FATE trackers that will monitor the respawn timers (dependent on player reporting of last spawn/kill). I know that Faloop covers EU though I'm not certain what other trackers also cover the EU data centers. Checking the trackers can help you narrow down when it's reasonable to expect a FATE to spawn and when you can be certain it won't.

Would it be helpful if SE integrated a tracker into the game so players don't have to rely on outside websites? Definitely. But until SE chooses to do so, at least there are resources to help.

The intent isn't to keep players subscribed by making them wait on long respawn timers. The intent is to make them rare enough that a lot of players show up to help kill it. These FATEs can and do fail if there's a lack of attendance.

It's also a single piece of content in a game with far, far more to do. I don't know what to say if having bad luck with this single FATE is enough to make you quit.

Same advice to you that I gave to Asako - join a cross world linkshell that focuses on FATEs, join a discord that relays data center hunts/FATEs, use the Faloop website that tries to announce major FATE spawns. You're not limited to doing the FATE on Zalera. You can do it on any of the Crystal worlds.
