How do we gear our retainers?

if you hand off a set of AF gear to the retainer, will the vendor allow you a second set, thats what I dont know.

The game should allow you to buy a second set in that case. The unique constraint is checked against the inventory where the item is destined to go. Your main inventory, equipment and the armoury chest form one inventory in this regard; each retainer has their own inventory, and the chocobo saddlebag is separate as well. This is very useful with treasure maps, of which you can normally only have one of each type. By handing maps off to retainers and putting them in the chocobo saddlebags you can stockpile a few maps and do them all in one session.

I tried that and it said "owned", wont let me get a second set.

Put your current set to your chocobo inventory. Get another one, give that set to retainer. Take out yours when you finish.

Oops. I forgot about this, and have been desynthing all my old gear instead of giving it to my retainers..

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think this is a new thing. The basic crafting recipes go up to 1 or 2 levels below cap, then level cap items are unlocked through Master Books. I haven't got a 90 crafter yet. Are there level 90 master books yet? I think it would be Mater recipes (9)?

Makes sense to me that there would be more of an emphasis on gaining crafting gear through crafting and combat gear through combat.

As with all expansions, the first new Master books are not released until the Savage mode of the first raid is released. That is when the new crafted gear comes out along with any other recipes included in what will be the Master Craft IX section for crafters.
