I don't think this is about competition. There's just no fun in camping the market 24/7 and wait for someone to go 1 gil below your price, then remove your item from the retainer's bazaar, wait 5 seconds for the UI to catch up with you, put up the item at the new price, repeat. Repeat forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and...

As a culinarian, there are some items I simply cannot sell at all. Shortly after I put up my Shepherd's Pie or Meat Miq'abob or whatever, someone will undercut me by 1 gil and that's it. The price usually doesn't go back up from there, and I don't have the time to camp the markets and constantly adjust my retainer.

I don't have any easy solution to fix this either though. I just hope the new market system in 2.0 will alleviate the problem a little.

If you were speaking to me, I'm actually putting in FAR less effort.. And my reasoning for pricing this way is:

Whenever I try to sell something QUICK for only slightly less than what others are selling for... (ex. Them: 40k, Me: 39k) someone will almost instantly go slightly lower (ex. 38k). I find people are less likely to do so if I price for quite a bit lower. I end up making my money fast, and it's done with. I don't have to check the wards every half hour. I can leave it knowing I have a nice competitive price going and I'm still making 100% profit.

Little effort, fast money, 100% profit. It's a pretty good situation if you ask me. :3

Guys, everyone has their own idea of what something is worth when they consider what effort it takes to obtain. Value and worth are subjective. The market sets the price, not you. This is no secret or conspiracy, it's just the fundamental laws of economics at play. Some of you seem to be advocating for price fixing...

I do support a minimum undercut though. I usually make it a point to not buy an item from someone that has undercut by say only one or two gil.

don't want undercut? make sure ur retainer name always the last one at the same price with others.

SE please make the AH system like it was in FFXI, make it so we can see the last 20 sales but not the players selling the items, nor the price the items are selling for. This is the only way of preventing people from consistently and methodically undercuttting other players. There are certain people that camp the wards with a specific item and will undercut anyone that tries to undercut them and ther ereally isn't anything one can do against this except sit at the wards al day and do the same...

It would also be nice if you could distinguish HQ items from NQ items, ecause in some cases there are 40 stacks of NQ items for sale and the only way of finding the HQ version is to search the wards retainers one by one. If you insist on keeping the AH system the way it is, at the very least make the sellers screen scrollable so players can scroll past the useless NQ and straight to the HQ...
