The Launch is not a Failure......Plenty of people have been able to play the game and have even beaten the MSQ already and LOVE the Story.
Some people have to sit through a long wait line but eventually get to play (such as myself)
And then there are some who unfortunately cant play till things wind down abit more towards the end of the month, but will get to play.
Not a Failure in the Slightest. Botched, scuffed maybe...but not a Failure.

Heres an idea though....while you wait your turn in line, go do something. Clean, make a snack/cook, take care of homework or housework. You have a computer or smartphone on the side? Watch some youtube and stuff.
There is lots you can do on the side while you can wait for the que.

Probably a bit of a case of mixed community messaging. People say "Go play something else" because usually that is an option for Playstation and PC players (either via tabbing out for PC players or picking up something else like a laptop or switch for playstation players). Obviously in your case that wouldn't apply, but people dont have a good grasp of everyone's individual circumstances and sort of just respond as if someone were in their own circumstances.

As to whether the launch was a failure or not- I think it was messy and I think Square do as well given the response. I dont have any advice on refunds since I know nothing about the refund policies of square but I hope either the queues get quicker for you or you get your money back

Also you do know it's take anywhere between 4-8 hours to even get into this game right?

The launch wasnt a success either imo. Else they wouldnt handout compensation.
They got the message and they'll try every method to get more superconductors. But due to shortage - there wont be a change anytime soon.

All we can do is wait for the on/off players to finish the story, leveling, etc. til the unsub-phase kicks in.

Call your friend, read a book, read a comic book, draw a picture, tidy ur room, clean the house, watch a TV show you could even watch a anime. Hey you go I have given you loads of options for you to do as you wait in the queue or even play a game on ur PC.
