If you have to wait 1 to 6 hours in queue why not step away from your pc then and do vital tasks? Unlike housing savage the wait time is pretty predictable. Heck if you see its gonna take 6 hours because your queue is 42k? (7k took me 1hour so 6h queue is 42k people) go get some sleep.
I can understand people not wanting to abandon to then get in a queue for ages again. But if it's getting to the point of affecting your mental health, I think it's a bit much to put the responsibility on SE or the devs, people need to step away and take a break if it's taking a mental strain.
And looking at the situation, what could they have done. Contrary to your claim about servers in 2017 more servers were added in 2019 and the semi conductor shortage began in 2019 and as of current the lead time is maybe 52 to 70 weeks (according to the industry not YoshiP)
The only thing they could have done is delay the expansion until they've got the servers. But the expansion is already later than it normally would be (even without the 2 week delay) and it would leave people with a huge content drought. And people can delay themselves until the congestion goes down enough anyway, which may be the better option for some people. It sucks, but I can't really see any other answers.

Regarding OP, you should rethink your relationship to the game if that’s how you feel. Sounds like an unhealthy relationship to me.
I started queuing earlier this week after work. In the meantime I started cooking dinner, opened myself a bottle of wine, and put on a tv series too. 3 hours later, turns out I had logged into the game, but by that time friends had randomly showed up for apero and we’d gone through more bottles of wine. When they left I logged out and went to sleep.
You don’t have to let the game dictate your life…

NO
Because as an Adult, I know that other things are more important then a Videogame. I will not forsake Necessities such as eating, showering, or sleep. I sure as heck am not gonna prioritize playing a videogame over IRL Social Interactivity, or getting Physical Exercise.
Anybody who is doing this might need help, because thats a Dangerous and Damaging Addiction. The Game isn't making anybody do this, they themselves are doing this, and it is Not Healthy.

The only negative consequence I've got from queueing for hours is that once I'm inside the game I no longer feel like playing anymore.
The 2002 error doesn't happen anymore so take that time waiting to shower, cook, play other games, do chores, whatever.
stop insulting poor karen :c

This^^ well said.I think long queues and gaming addictions are not related in anyway shape or form.
If some one stays up 3 days straight playing a video game, it is likely because they have a problem not because of long queues. I will almost guarantee that same person that stayed awake 3 days straight has done so for every expansion launch.
Now I am sure there are people that try to max out game time as long as possible when they get past the queue, but IMO those are individuals showing symptoms of a gaming addition. The long queue time would just be there excuse. They can just as easily wake up earlier to avoid the queue and play shorter sessions.
Long queues are not causing any issues to peoples mental health, FFXIVs dev team, SE, or any other video game company has very little to do with your mental health. In the end this is a video game you are responsible for your own life and you make your own decision. If anything I think it is showing how many people have a gaming addiction.
This thread is as dumb of a subject as do violent games cause violent people. You should be ashamed to try and relate a problem with logging into a video game to mental health issues.
Enjoy Life you only get one.

That, uh.... wasn't about adding servers. That was about DC split from Chaos into Chaos+Light (which also happened to come with one new server for each onboard, but servers themselves absolutely couldn't increase queue times as cross-world DF was already a thing).
I imagine some solution is really underway or they are stressed at HQ because as you say once you start doing other things your brain will start realizing dopamine comes from other ventures thus lowering your 'want' for ff14..and they want you to be happy and want to play (dopamine is a strong chemical kupo.)
Course once you do log in happily after a small hiatus the dopamine is that much greater and yields joy joy feelings
