The only hardcore mmo out there right now is EVE, which is waaaay over my head and a little late for me to start it up now. As others have said, you don't need 1mil subs to be a success, why not make a game for those few 100k player. Eve has what like 300k or so? They are doing just fine, FFXI did great. You don't need millions of people to make a profit.

If they just turned this into FFXI-2 you would have at least 300k players.
I'm sure there's a market out there for an MMO like Demons Souls. FFXIV is not that game. You will never, ever be happy in the game until you accept it for what it is. It is NOT a hardcore game and I doubt it will ever be as masochistic as FFXI was. A game like Demons Souls is just that, masochistic and I'm sure that's why people love it.

CoP was fantastic, after CoP the other expansions felt as though they were missing something in way of difficulty and content. I never felt CoP was so hard that you needed a static to finish it. That said I did have a few people that I always did the missions with, but never a full 6. Over 80% of CoP was done with shout PUGs (pre-nerf) with the other 20% being random LS mates tagging along either because they needed it or were passed it and willing to help.

This game is in serious lack of good group based story content, closest thing we have now are job classes with most of those being solo til the 45's, and even then it was rather easy with less then 8. Don't get me wrong here the job missions were a step in the right direction, and I enjoyed them very much. I only hope in the future we can get something on par with the avatar fights for mission based content.

SE doesn't "need" to turn this game into FFXI-2. All they need to do is release a worthwhile expansion for XI.

I see peoples issues with making the main story line challenging but how about introducing side missions of sorts? The FF series is pretty famous for including difficult side quest in the games that not every player will attempt or experience. FFXIV will hopefully be big enough for that. What I want for this game is to have more content then I can keep up with, and maybe some sort of side mission can accomplish that. Again not something everyone will attempt or get through but as long as SE pumps out meaningful more casual content, is this such a bad thing?

I did notice the bit about WoW with easy mode and hard mode...but I really think that is a cop-out of sorts(a successful one mind you) but in a real world...there is no such thing as a easy mode, it's "what it is" and that's it. I realize that it's been included in FFXIV to an extent but not to the extent that it was in WoW.

It dunno, WotG was pretty good as far as "pretty difficult but not masochistic" goes. Also had a better story IMO.

I would love to add point , we need content which very difficult . . and that content be close to be unbeatable level,
that would create some division that game need, we need people who taking hard level and people who still doing casual level. its not fair to keep everyone in same level .. but im not against adding more instanced raid for casual players
but we deserve have some challenges which will make us suffer to achieve !!!!

This already exist! You can always try and solo Uraeus! ^^ Or, if you want even tougher challenge, get a PT and go farm guardian of the grove! ^^

This thread makes me facepalm lol. Yes XIV needs challenging content...no it doesnt need to be like CoP. If its optional, sure...but good luck getting anyone to do it with you.

Zaaku you need to stop living in the past. The MMO culture has changed. You are like a samurai whos desperately trying to relive the glory days of feudal Japan. Its over. Come back to 2012. Ppl like you need to learn to forge ahead instead of clinging to the past. The past wasnt good enough. XI had only moderate success. Why mimic whats already proven to deliver limited results? XIV needs to change with the times...and that is what its doing.

For ppl who cant change...go play all the old games you loved so much. Play with your fellow niche players in everquest, lineage 2, DaoC, etc etc. They are still around. Let XIV do its thing and stop shackling it to the substandard 500k that XI had. XIV needs to go way beyond that...especially given all the money that was lost. Go big or go home.

It's okay Zaaku, I'm a game designer and will one day make a game that fits your exact needs. Because I feel you, and think the glory days of FFXI need to be relived, as even current FFXI doesn't have that feel anymore.

CoP is a pretty amazing part of FFXI that I will never forget. The people in my party will prolly never forget PM5-3 or 6-4 either haha. I agree that FFXIV desperately needs something like this. Save the world from emptiness ftw.

You say that yet we all know there are big changes coming in 2.0

You have no idea what it may turn into. Given their finacial gain on FFXI standard and the just embarrassing flop of FFXIV's release they may tune back in with what they know and what they already have a stable player base vested in.

This is what PLers actually believe. May Altana have mercy on our souls...
