The only hardcore mmo out there right now is EVE, which is waaaay over my head and a little late for me to start it up now. As others have said, you don't need 1mil subs to be a success, why not make a game for those few 100k player. Eve has what like 300k or so? They are doing just fine, FFXI did great. You don't need millions of people to make a profit.

If they just turned this into FFXI-2 you would have at least 300k players.
SE doesn't "need" to turn this game into FFXI-2. All they need to do is release a worthwhile expansion for XI.

I see peoples issues with making the main story line challenging but how about introducing side missions of sorts? The FF series is pretty famous for including difficult side quest in the games that not every player will attempt or experience. FFXIV will hopefully be big enough for that. What I want for this game is to have more content then I can keep up with, and maybe some sort of side mission can accomplish that. Again not something everyone will attempt or get through but as long as SE pumps out meaningful more casual content, is this such a bad thing?

I did notice the bit about WoW with easy mode and hard mode...but I really think that is a cop-out of sorts(a successful one mind you) but in a real world...there is no such thing as a easy mode, it's "what it is" and that's it. I realize that it's been included in FFXIV to an extent but not to the extent that it was in WoW.
