In all honesty the way they've handled this is very meh. Sure they are giving 7 days of free time, but at the same time the error they can most likely fix is the prime culprit in all the anger. 2002.

If the 2002 Error wasn't a thing, the outrage wouldn't be nearly as high. As it stands, not only do you have to sit in a 3-4 hour queue. But you literally have to sit there and stare at the screen for those hours just in case the error happens, so you can frantically try to get back in.
When people can't do much else besides staring at a screen waiting for their inevitable doom, they get upset and start roaming the forums.
