    Gaming VPN vs 2002 error?

So 2002 error when in que. "The other occurs when your internet connection experiences packet loss or a period of network instability, causing the server connection to be momentarily disconnected. At the moment, we are seeing more cases caused by this."

So most people are not happy about being in a que. But they understand it is part of modern gaming. What they aren't happy about is randomly being pushed to the back of the line.

So if you don't think you have any problems with the connection in your house. And people have mentioned and documented losing packets while connecting to FF14. It is in one of the other forums, seemed interesting if you are bored. I am wondering if anyone if anyone using these gamer vpns who have a que over 1k have never seen a 2002 error?

I use a VPN and got hit by the 2002 error a few times yesterday (during prime time) with queues of 5000+. I think the network instability is just server overload at SE's end (which Yoshi has already commented on). It doesn't seem to occur as much as other users have reported, but it is certainly there, VPN or not.

I don't use a VPN, I'm on Ps4 Pro and I get no error message. But the FFXIV authentication server crashes because it is overloaded.

    What should I think?

VPN is not magic. It works just as well with a good connection and low latency without third party software.

Although the announcement make it sounds like it's the connection issues on your end to cause error 2002 and get kick out. but it's not. it's on their side.

I think they know in this case it is their side.

however, at 1 am on the 3rd, when I got the error I looked it up, because I have never seen it before.

there are several articles that talk about it being something with connection, and few mentions about the login server.

historically, it may have been connection, lets face it, internet connections have changed over the years so back in the day, may have been more of an issue. in any troubleshooting, the fall back is always to start at the simple, which would be make sure the connection is good. yes, I know, most will be, but they still have to mention it even if they know its the login server. because there are always going to be 'just in case' issues where it might be.

I use a VPN 100% of the time now, after finding out my ISP's interference broke multiplayer in another game. It stopped an issue where I'd sometimes get the 90k errors on pushing commence for a duty finder popup.

However, as far as 2002 goes for this expac launch, it doesn't seem to help at all. There's little to no errors early in the day but once the queues are high, I'll get several 2002's while waiting in queue to log in.

Realistically, if the Queue crashes out with 17,000+ in it for whatever reason, the sensible solution to avoid players erroring out of the queue due to this would be to have the Login Server reject new connection attempts when the total Queue for the Data Center is 16000 or higher. "Due to severe server congestion, the queue is full at this time. Please try again in a few minutes." And only permit new bodies in the queue once it's below 16,000. Simple and sensible to implement, and would completely remedy one cause of these 2002 errors.

Then it comes down to the connection disruption 2002s (the ones in the part of the announcement OP quoted), and those? There's not a quick and simple fix to that one. That could be on either end of the connection or, more likely, some point in the middle. UDP is notoriously clumsy, and the more hops between you and your destination the more likely a packet gets misplaced. A bit like airports and luggage really.

The issues that are currently happening with the servers probably can't be solved just by using a VPN. This is strictly on SE's end and it's a problem that should be easily fixable but sadly it's a bit more complicated than some seem to think.
