The capacity issues should have been addressed years ago, to be fair. And no, this is not going to get any better for at least a few weeks.
what capacity issues should have been adressed years ago ? the 5 minute max "regular" login queues i had during the last 7 years or the 1 hour queues during primetime for 1 week after older expansion launches ?
people act all pissy going "square should just have bought more/better servers 5+ years ago, that they haven't done so shows they are cheapskates". sorry but i want to see you guys run a business where you spend tons of money, like "holy fuck this shit is getting really expensive with time" amounts of money to keep stuff ready for the total fringe case where your biggest competitor basically kills itself 5 years down the line meaning you suddenly have to serve 50% more customers than you could ever have reasonably expected..
They've been using server/capacity issues as an excuse for many things over the years. This is also a huge reason for the stat squish. Now it is finally boiling over.what capacity issues should have been adressed years ago ? the 5 minute max login queues i had during the last 7 years or the 1 hour queues during primetime for 1 week after older expansion launches ?

The problem here is that you are obviously not able to see what others are seeing, you have your acceptable queue lengths- fine. Others don't, I queued for 4.5 hours yesterday before I got in at 30 past midnight my time- it's the only time I've been able to get in since this friday. I used to have queues before the launch to but it was more like 5-10 minutes which was ok.what capacity issues should have been adressed years ago ? the 5 minute max login queues i had during the last 7 years or the 1 hour queues during primetime for 1 week after older expansion launches ?

I rather see they prioritise players with lower playtime during this period, e.g if you played for four hours and logged off, reenter the queue you would be prioritised over those with six hours playtime etc.
you misunderstood my point it seems. i just like everyone else face queues of 8k+ people when i try to log in. i just like everyone else am effected by getting random dc's during the login process and getting thrown back to the back of the queue. that sucks and i won't say "oh yea, totally great, perfect launch" . what i am saying is that a lot of people act like square should just have bought more servers years ago so NOW this problem wouldn't exist, and to that i say sorry but no, that's not how businesses work, if they did you would call them charities. The problem here is that you are obviously not able to see what others are seeing, you have your acceptable queue lengths- fine. Ok, I'm not sure I follow your reasoning though, Square been quite offensive marketing final fantasy; they had/have a very generous trial mode and so on then stars aligned and people finally had it with Blizzard not listening to community feedback- it was never about infrastructure- the great migration happened and all budgets and projections of course got skewed, the decision was made to stop selling Final Fantasy XIV to new players for a while, that situation I can completely understand was out of the blue for Square Enix.you misunderstood my point it seems. i just like everyone else face queues of 8k+ people when i try to log in. i just like everyone else am effected by getting random dc's during the login process and getting thrown back to the back of the queue. that sucks and i won't say "oh yea, totally great, perfect launch" . what i am saying is that a lot of people act like square should just have bought more servers years ago so NOW this problem wouldn't exist, and to that i say sorry but no, that's not how businesses work, if they did you would call them charities.
But this expansion- that been hyped for a long time and with past history in mind can not been a surprise, I think this situation is no one elses fault but Square Enix and it smells greed long way, but I also believe this will backlash tremendously if not sorted out, it has nothing to do being a charity, they actively baited for players- now they got them and they can't service them.
at least wow crashing as hard as it did couldn't have been anticipated even a year ago, given that blizz really worked hard to tank as hard as they did, like shit i'm not sure how one company can pull so many fuckups in half a year.Ok, I'm not sure I follow your reasoning though, Square been quite offensive marketing final fantasy; they had/have a very generous trial mode and so on then stars aligned and people finally had it with Blizzard not listening to community feedback- it was never about infrastructure- the great migration happened and all budgets and projections of course got skewed, the decision was made to stop selling Final Fantasy XIV to new players for a while, that situation I can completely understand was out of the blue for Square Enix.

yes, square did miss properly preparing for the case that the perfect storm aligns as it did, people in these threads however dismiss even the possibility of "covid is at least partially making the situation worse than it would be otherwise" by arguing that square could just have upgraded years ago, and that notion is just crazy from a business perspective.
Regarding WoW I'm actually surprised it didn't happen sooner, I think the main reason it took as long as it did was because Blizzard baited a lot of people to pay for a 6 month subscription upfront- but only provided content for 1 month and to spread it out they time gated and inflated virtual currencies etc they did it before and it was frown upon, this year people had more time on their hands and quickly burned out knocking their head against the wall.
Same thing could happen here, as for semiconductor shortage du to COVID yes it's true, but that servers are not available is bullshit. Another thing I think Square Enix handled incredibly poorly is the Mac release of this game, it's always been a second class citizen; infact it's almost tragic to call it a mac version as it's the windows version running in a crossover (wine) compatibility layer.
Well Apple released according to plan; it was no surprise at all, developers had access to the prerelease versions for over 6 months, did Square Enix do anything? Nope nothing at all until it was released and suddenly everyone who upgraded was unable to even launch the binary due to an incompatibility, Square Enix response? "We might fix this in december" fortunately tech savy people figured out what the issue was and removing a single file was all required to get it started, but non the less they charge full price for it and it's obviously not even supported.
Or another example some year ago I bought Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition on my iPhone, this year I upgraded to an iPhone 12 Pro Max launchd the game and to my surprise audio just doesn't work- wrote Square Enix tech support, got the classic "restart phone, check mute status" etc wrote back and then all of sudden they responded this was a known issue and it will be fixed in a future update but no ETA, well this is over 7 months ago and yet no update surfaced- but instead they released "pixel remastered" version of other Final Fantasy games.
And even worse, I was stupid enough to buy a Final Fantasy bundle on steam during this summer it included FF XIII and XIII-2 among others, I thought great I never played those the darn games don't even launch on an updated system- there was not a word about it on the product page I read the forums and see this is an issue that been reported over and over again years ago, still not fixed... But let me guess there will be a FF XIII pixel remaster or something sooner or later- of course you have to purchase it again.
Personally I feel my patience with Square Enix is very thin by now and this certainly did not improve it, the FFXIV dev team seem cool and nice but SE as a company has soon seen my last cents. This is the only SE game I still pay for and then this happens but anyway can't do much but complain at the moment, but I for one will leave this permanently if it's not sorted before this year is over.
