If it was a choice between Anima and Sisters being trials vs the ones we did get, then I'd choose the ones we did get without flinching. That said...it would've been cool to have full trials with them, I get it. Anima especially just seems like such a prime candidate for it. It's a shame we couldn't have just had an extra trial.
As for the lore behind her/him now, well...it doesn't take away from X for me; I don't have any strong opinions about it. Different games, different incarnations; much like Bahamut has very different roles across the series sometimes. It's sort of cool in a way that he's essentially the "Garlean primal".

For me, I feel like they delegated Primals to dungeons because, other then a select few, Primals are pretty much not a threat to us and our allies (we can cure and prevent tempering, so now anyone strong enough can take care of them).

Big spoilsies for the first trial:
I, for one, appreciate the HIGHI amount of bamboozle when it comes to these bosses. Though I expect for them to become real trials later on in endgame.
~sigh~
exactly, he announces a ferrari and we find ourselves in lada with 4 flat tire...........
We are 3/4 in front of anima dungeon at be "Anima is not a trial" on PU team, big faintness
I can understand that it might feel frustrating but at the same time (as someone that barely played any other FF) I am happy that an old FF boss is not one of the big trials of the final arc. Let them be creative and at least give us new ones for the MSQ trials. We (imo) get enough fanservice stuff in the other parts of the game.

My feelings are mixed on this. I think it would have been more poetic to make Anima the first trial. Along with the Ascians, Garlemald was the "big threat", and to not have that resolved with a trial just feels like they got shafted. Add to that the fact that I think the final boss's design/concept is pretty...bad?, so I could have done without that whole affair and just skipped it altogether for the final solo duty.
There is some small hope that we might get an ultimate trial that could assemble some of the one-off primals into something vaguely coherent, maybe something FFX-themed Garlemald-tour:
* Yojimbo (Doma)
* Ixion (Gyr Abania)
* Magus Sisters (Thavnair)
* Anima (Garlemald)
It could work, even though I think the devs will not be considering it for a while, given that the more likely Ultimates that will take precedent include:
* Thordan and Nidhogg
* The Warring Triad (and Kefka?)
* The Four Lords of the East
* The Lightwardens
* The Weapons
* (Maybe) The Oracles of Light and Darkness
* (Maybe) Gilgamesh and ExDeath
* (Maybe but hopefully not) The Lunar Primals

I had expected Anima to be a trial, not a dungeon boss. However, we were never told it would be anything in particular so that's a self-imposed expectation.
I feel like the character of Anima played an important enough role, though, so I'm not disappointed. It might not have been a huge boss, but it was a very significant plot point.
