Im actually surprised we are getting an OCE Data center, considering NZ players are charged in massively inflated Euros making the game hugely more expensive to play than if it was charged in US$, they think NZ and Australia are somewhere in Europe and not just to the south of Japan a ways.

For those who are saying they had two years to prep for this, they were. The planned OCE datacenter would have helped both the JP and NA servers. Granted it wouldn't have done a thing for the EU servers, but I imagine during the planning they didn't see enough projected growth to source the funds into that. What everyone is glossing over is the unexpected (and unpredictable) migration of WoW players to FF14 following the problems of Shadowlands and their current lawsuit problems. This sudden explosion of population during a time where getting servers on demand is all but impossible is what has led to where we are today. They even admitted back during the initial explosion that they were offering to buy the hardware at more than three times the market cost, but still weren't able to find a supplier. So they were willing the shell out the money, within reason of course because at the end of the day they need money for other things. It sucks, it really does. Not being able to get in and sitting in a long queue sucks beyond all belief. I'm not a fan of it, and the 2002 errors have been annoying me to no end. But at the same time, I know at this point there is nothing that can be done. The hardware can't be obtained at the moment, and any change to cloud computing would require a complete restructure of the game's networking code thus making that another improbability. To those pointing to MMOs using cloud services such as AWS, those games were built from the ground up to operate on the cloud. Is it possible? Yes. Would it be a solution that would resolve things within any kind of reasonable time? No.

If you think it's bad now wait til Tuesday when people return for the official release. I have a bad feeling this will persist through the first quarter of 2022. The only thing that would releave the pressure would be new and more server capacity. While I understand the problems caused by the pandemic there will be no relief until SE if willing to delegate the implementation of these new servers to competent local companies instead of demanding the their people closely oversee all aspects of the installation.

I get that and understand it, but at the same time SE is a hugely popular company. My frustrations are more for my Wife than for myself since I have quite a few games I can play while they figure the whole thing out. She only plays FFXIV and she loves it, however when she gets all the way down to 300 "in line" after waiting for 4 hours to get to that point, only to get the 2002 error for the next 5-10 minutes and get kicked back to 8000+ in que has begun to make neither of us want to play the game nor support its growth. Since expansion launch I've gotten in 1 time and only for about 30 minutes, she's managed 2 logins at about an hour each after the long wait times. Sure the influx of WoW players was unexpected and queue times on a new expansion, or even normal prime time, are to be expected but 30 minute AFK timer's are easily gotten around by anyone that has been gaming in this genre of gaming. Would be one thing to sit in a queue, or even keep your place "in line" should random 2002 connections happen, but to have someone sit there for almost 4 hours and lose that spot due to an issue on their end is kind of a crappy deal for the player trying to get into the game.

Yes the games that are leveraging all the benefits (and in particular the cost savings) of running in the cloud are of course built ground up to operate in the cloud, but this does not mean that software not designed with cloud in mind can't run in the cloud. It can be very expensive (compared to physical hardware you own) but you also have to realise that if a situation like this is not solved quickly you risk loosing lots of customers with recurring payment, we will see what happens but we're just two days in and many players are already upset about this; what do you think will happen during weekdays when people work and most everyone of those are unable to play outside peak hours? What happens when in a few weeks when it's x-mas; it's not too far fetched to believe that a fair share may get endwalker from their parents, spouse, girl/boyfriend and so on.

Do anyone seriously believe this will rectify itself automagically? Probably not likely until most players reached end game in this expansion and considering the queue times this will probably take a while regardless how dedicated the player is, something has to be done- "free days" are of course a mitigation factor but it's not a solution, it may keep people cool for a while though.

Lol so I go kicked out of the game with a disconnect error, try to get back in and there's a 6,590 player que. So you know what ? I made another character on a Japanese server that has only a 9 player que. Might be an option. If only we could transfer characters to different data centers, I would get off mine

I ran across an annoying problem with the queuing. I appreciate that if you get booted/crashed out, you retain your place in line. However, If you are close (I was #29) and you get kicked out with a lobby error, I had to start again at over 4400. If I wait 1.5 hours to get through the line, and then get kicked out that close to the end, I shouldn't have to restart the line all over again.

I dont think SE are entirely "innocent" especially on handling EU DC.
Even 2019 EU DC split, we are quite near the capacity, some popular server constantly have queue, and less than half of our worlds allow new characters, while having a very good planning and forecast on JP DC.

    OCE servers in AU right?

From AU site, a fully vaccinated Japanese citizen travelling from Japan and arriving into a participating Australian state or territory that allows fully vaccinated travellers to arrive quarantine-free (from 15 December 2021)

Japan also allows travel. Extremely inconvenient rules to come back. Unless the team working on servers are not Japanese citizens. Otherwise they could have travelled by now. If they aren't Japanese citizens they probably won't be able to safely leave for months.

Also the people thinking this will greatly help NA servers are you sure. Or will it just be another help for JPN servers. I thought OCE players already had a server they had picked and it was a JPN one.
