This quest was utterly atrocious. And this from someone who beat it in their first go.
It boggles the mind that so many ardent defenders (Read that literally. This doesn't refer to people who simply enjoy the thing in their own corner) keep needling on about the difficulty as if that were the problem at hand. I put a lot of care in the appearance and development of my character. Every quest that forces me into the skin of another has me so bored out of my mind, especially with how painfully streamed lined (literally to one button) their kits are. I've always been a proponent of storytelling through gameplay, but this was done horrifically badly. People have different tolerances and priorities between gameplay and immersion/story, which is why we're seeing somewhat of a variety in opinion. I'm of the thought that story matters immensely up until the point gameplay has to suffer for it. In this quest, gameplay /painfully/ suffered. For no reason, mind. It wasn't for story, certainly, since there was contrived reasons Zenos wasn't detected. There was some nonsensical Instant Transmission of our hero from one side of the map to the other despite being in a body that was both at death's door and incapable of processing aether (meaning regeneration/healing those wounds were literally impossible. To succumb to the wounds was a certainty. You may think your convictions can surmount anything, but I can guarantee you that even it can't handle a failing body). Then it's off to the races as if nothing has happened, undermining the importance of what was supposed to be a 'tense' moment all the more. Didn't help that apparently thinking "I might need this fuel tank later" was something the devs considered too clever and so they forbid you from taking it until you speak with some useless corpse-adjacent then have to double back for... really no reason than just because.
It was all frustration. No tension. And literally the quest after, nobody cares. If you like this, all the power to you. But it wasn't hard and to pretend it had any impact on the story as a whole is plain objectively incorrect. They really should add a 'skip' to playing other NPCs. I'm sure SE feels very proud of their designs, but these designs weren't cute five years ago and they aren't cute now.
It's getting old.
I think this quest done what it set out to do. Put fear in me and let me feel what it's like to be an ordinary Garlean soldier who can't use magic but have to contend with you, the warrior of light who can easily mow down any adversaries.
Gameplay wise it's only seems difficult because you as the player are thrust into it without knowing where to go first so you'd naturally try to head south where the broken Magitech is. It's become clear what you need to do if you trial and error it.
My only qualm with this quest is that I wish I didn't have to start again from the very begining of the long serie of cutscenes.
Of course once you know what to do then it'll only take you about 7min to complete if that.
Common sense is not so common anymore.
I dislike a few things in FFXIV:
1) beat down -- when the enemy disables you, even though you could just kick their teeth in, and were already winning
2) rp -- when you create a character and level it for months and months, and then are forced to play with a class you did NOT care for
3) time limits -- i like to do things at my own pace, especially since i have a lot of other stuff going on
4) being reminded that this is a game, when something breaks my immersion in a way I can't just suspend
5) endless duties -- when everything has large pools of hp, and the fights drag out, which doesn't make them harder, but more tedious
6) nod nod -- when you're in a cutscene after a long fight for your life, you beat the enemy, he stands up, delivers a cartoon villain speech and walks away, and all you do is standing there, clenching your fist
7) hide & seek -- find 3 X in this red circle. makes my blood boil every time.
Any of the above makes me roll my eyes and hope it won't take too long to get it done with. It's why I usually try to suicide as quick as possible, so I can switch to "very easy". Not because it's not hard, but because I like the game, but don't want to put up with the parts I hate.
Well, having beaten the quest, and the dungeon and trial afterwards... I have a more full picture of the quest, and I can say that the quest is annoying, a waste of time and all around a negative on the game.
Nothing of value was gained, nothing really happened and it managed to take the impact off of the dungeon and the trial. The story would actually be better if the quest wasn't there.
It wasn't a very well designed duty, and although I cleared it my first try, it took me ages to find the fuel for the magitech.
The segment was fine in principle, it just needed more direction.
I believe this quest was hard on purpose, but I disagree about this quest being atrocious. I strongly believe the intent and design behind this quest was to trigger the player. All the lore around this quest, stakes and timelimit are designed to trigger the player and push him/her to his limit. If that sort of stuff happened to me in real life, I would go mad very quickly, and the same happened during this quest. I was so taken and focused by it that I cleared it on first try (52hp left lol), looking everywhere and doing my best for... you know what (stakes).
If the intent of the developers were to push the player in a situation where he/she has to do his best to prevent the "thing", then I believe this quest is a masterpiece, a masterclass on gamedesign.
I've hated this quest from my character PoV. From a player PoV, I love how the quest was put together to push me to my limits.
I found the quest really unintuitive and can see why some players are having trouble with it.
Didn't help that the narrative around it was really awkward and felt like it was there to justify the duty itself.
The quest is annoying enough, but that isn't my issue with it. Spoilers inc.
I lost a lot of faith in my character thanks to this quest. All this time we have been led to believe our character was special. More CONCENTRATED, so to speak. We resist tempering, we possess the Echo, we face insurmountable odds all the time.
Then we are casually kidnapped, our body taken, our spirit shunted into some nothing body, apparently without effort.
It's like we get raped for this quest. Never has being in my character been so uncomfortable. Never again SE. It WILL cause me to quit. Thanks for giving the impression of great power and then completely removing it.
Far too often have I been made to feel like a tool this expansion. Are we really so great, or just a means to an end we have zero control over?
