First of all, you are not playing a complex and difficult game. You are playing FFXIV. A game for filthy casuals like me.
Your "complexity" and "skill" revolve around performing 1 of 2 or 3 rotation variations, without fail, over the course of a fight, while moving to CLEARLY marked areas at specific times over and over again. And occasionally popping an mp item to keep the rotation going and squeezing off 1 more hit.
I think a lot of the people that think FFXIV is complex never played FFXI. FFXIV isn't nuanced or complex - it's about being good at staying busy, without any true reactionary skills aside from "get out of the clearly marked glowing area for a few seconds or be insta-killed and/or ejected from the battlefield".
Summoner in XIV was never a complex job - it was a busy job. Now it's less busy, and that appeals to the casual players that are *gasp* 95% of the playerbase and keep the lights on at SE's office, because this game is a casual game FOR casuals. Any attempt at trying to convince oneself that this game somehow tailors to or awards the elite is self-delusion.
TL;DR version: If you want a game that doesn't hand-hold, features Summoners that have truly controllable avatars that deal massive single target damage and also provide party buffs, and rewards skill over repetition, you should switch to FFXI. FFXIV was never the game for you.
Any other complaint is based on some flawed logic that pressing "1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3" versus "1, 3, 2, 4, 1, 1, 3, 2, 4" is less complex or skillful. Again, you're either not playing the game you should be playing and should switch to FFXI, or you are advocating for a game that nobody else wants to play. Go play Guitar Hero on a keyboard if pressing a series of keys at the exact right moment gives you your endorphin release.
