Multiverse Final Fantasy MMORPG (What could have been)

I was talking to my cousin who grew up playing RPG's with me and we were discussing how Square was before Enix merger and how the games have changed. What inspired during that conversation was a rather neat idea.

Its hard to argue that Square Enix has made a well conceived Final Fantasy title since Final Fantasy X (FFX). It feels as though they have lost their way. (This is not including Final Fantasy XI "FFXI") I would even argue that the only reason why Square Enix has been so successful with titles post FFX is through the weight that carries with the Final Fantasy title. Recently major websites have stated that Japanese companies are loosing their way, that Final Fantasy should die off, and even producers from Square Enix have been quoted saying that fans need to give up on remakes that would obviously make the company tons of money.

When considering the most famous JPRG's of all time you will always run into the more popular Final Fantasy titles such as FFIV,FFVI,FFVII,FFVIII,FFX. So the question is what if Square would have put all these titles together to form a Final Fantasy MMORG of epic proportions?

Familar Faces and Races, Epic villains we have all come to love, races that fans of the series were begging to be able to play again, Epic stories that could be elaborated, pre established geography.

Imagine yourself starting in Baron castle and meeting Kain Highwind and Cecil, or Going to Arieths flower shop or Tifas 7th heaven, watching blitz ball in Zanarkand. Fighting Kefka, Sephiroth, Garland, Kuja, Hojo. Fighting all the most epic hidden bosses such as Osma, Emerald and Ruby Weapons, scaling the Mage tower. Why couldn't this have transpired we may have had the MMORPG that had style, familiarity, and the WoW killer of the century.

I came from a backround that was Capcom in a fighting game scene that allowed the players to be heard. So if you are at all interested in seeing this come to fruition no matter how improbable it seems. (I get the logistics that FFXIV just came out) Maybe we can see something like this in the future. So I encourage you all to post your thoughts and opinions both pro and con and let your voices be heard. If people are adamant enough anything is possible.

How is a game that lacks a identity going to be a "WoW killer"?

Final Fantasy didn't get to be such a big name by making us kill Kefka every few years.

The idea is that you take a fan base that supported the series for 20+ years and give them something familar with a twist. You take the 85 million copies of cumulative Final Fantasy sales and combine it into one game. Thats got a lot of pull.

What if they combined aspects of FF and the Ogre Battle series into an MMORPG...

Could have just made it more like FFT Online and it would have been just fine, and what I mean by that is copy the same style progression systems, classes, maybe even the same theme of story, several houses competing for control while unknown evils prepare to dominate the world.

PvP, Dungeons, Housing, Conquests blah blah blah would have been a no brainer in a world like that.

@ Jynx What are you talking about. The game would be a culmination of identities. LMAO Final fantasy is famous for storylines, setting standards, and gameplay mechanics none of which the modern games exude. If what you are saying is that a multiverse game would lack identity you are out of your mind.

If each expansion added a game or two the the MMOPRG you have a long lifetime with new content. You have more identity then you can deal with. More races, more personality, more architecture, more climates and geography. Dude do I really have to name every bit of identity for you?

O and yes Final Fantasy didnt get its name from killing Kefka it got its name from Sakaguchi being that it was supposed to be the first and last RPG he would make.

Oh crap! We got someone pulling at semantics here!

My point stands extremly firm, Final Fantasy has never been popular for rehashing it's past games or storylines. The only cross-over that Square Enix is likely to do wont span far from Kingdom hearts and it's ill-fated Disidia titles. (Great fighting games by the way) Just poorly received.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but I can guarantee a main titled Final Fantasy game will never, be a multiverse-rehash. I will eat my shoes otherwise.

Every game in the main numbered series has been set in vastly different worlds often with vastly different gameplay. Some cross-over cameos have always been a staple of the series but straight out tearing them from other universes has never and probably never will be a mainstay in the main series.

Even if pulled off it would be neigh impossible to please the series fans, what happens when fan backlash about who is a better character Squall or Cloud, or Locke! Who is the more powerfull villain Sephiroth or Kefka? How about that Ex-Death.

SE would be wise to not touch these debates with a thousand foot poll as you can upset your fan-base far to easilly with this. A fighting game is one thing because it doesn't really show one character as more powerfull than another, but a MMO?
What happens when Sephiroth is the 50cap final boss of the current story. Few years down the road they raise the level cap and now Kuja is the big bad-endgame boss. People will Roflstomp Sephiroth and fans will rage.

It's just a terrible, terrible idea in my honest opinion.

The idea of crossing FF worlds in an MMO sounds like a horrible idea.

Plus you have that game, it's called Dissidia.

FFXII did a pretty good job of making previous FF villains into espers, but that's probably as far as I'd take it. Ever.

Dissidea was a garbage fighting game. Thats why if failed. I would also like to ask why crossing FF worlds would be a horrible idea? What about it makes is so fail?

Let me put it this way. I would like people to at least back their opinions so that they are somewhat valid. Instead of _____ is a horrible idea because it is. I dont know why it just is. (This is a first grader argument)

I bet you didnt play most of the Final Fantasy games either, I would tag you as someone who prolly started around the PS2 era and if that is the case I see why you would say such a thing.

Im not talking about fusing two worlds together. I am talking about zones let me think of an example. Think of the universes being seperate zones with seperate storylines. Each with a starting city. So that each player could start in the storyline they wanted and this would be a horrible idea why?
