The part that still confuses me the most about it is that there was a concerted effort to correct all re-releases of the games in the series that had previously changed them due to console limitations. At the time of FFXIV 2.0's release, the only game not to have the suffixes either originally or via re-release in English was VII because it didn't have any sort of remake yet. Like I basically figure there's someone at the NA offices in charge of maintaining the consistency, and I don't know how FFXIV got away with the numbers.

When you see a suffix like "ga" then this is not clear and you have to look at the details of the spell. Numbers are more intuitive, IMHO.
This is the exact reason everyone hates them. Bunch of people seeing "Fire II" and thinking it must be better than Fire because it has a number on the end, when they serve completely different functions. Well that and the fact that it's completely un-Final Fantasy.
