Much like how Bruce Wayne lost his parents the Warrior of Light loses his bestfriend/lover (depending on who you ask) and this trauma inspires both of them to take up the mantle of Dark Knight.

Fray and Ra's Al Ghul play similar parts as the enigmatic teacher who betrays their student and in their defeat complete The Dark Knight's transformation into the Spirit of Vengeance that they sought.

The Temple Knights and the Gotham Mafia both are corrupting influences that do horrific acts upon the populace and The Dark Knight dispatches JUSTICE upon them.
