Changes I am proposing. First apologies for editing this post again, with that said I have an idea and I think it would be great for everyone.
Leave the districts the way they are with one exception, make them FC housing districts that also allow current single home owners to keep them. Give these owners the option to keep them as long as they want. Give them an option if they decide to change housing options to receive their gil back in full, and perhaps add some unique item or title like those who have been around since before the calamity.
When homes open up through the 45 day no activity period, or that players choice those housing plots move to FC only lots.
Bring instanced housing to FFXIV similar but better than FFXIV.
Allow players in instanced housing to bring up to 24 people in for private parties, housing comp's, gardening, private content to earn gil, etc!
These changes will exponentially increase crafting and gathering for housing items. It will increase demand for seeds and gardening. You will be able to change your chocobo color in your private home!
You could also possibly pick from multiple skins for your house from, like say waterfront, city, country, desert, space?? There could be maybe a dozen or 2 dozen skins to choose from to give a feeling of uniqueness and style.
This would also increase bag space for those of us storing housing items until we can get a house.
This would also allow players with instanced homes to leave the game for more than 45 days any time they want, and avoid losing their home and housing items for not being subscribed for 45 days thus avoiding the rent you pay to keep your home in the housing district.
Could there be a patch that was like a FFXIV housing reborn, calamity style as an example but could be something unique and more relevant to housing?
I believe Yoshi is willing to make great changes if they don't hurt any players and respecting what they have in game and the work they have put in all while making major improvements for the far greater number of players having a difficult time getting where they want because of the current set up.
I support all of you who have your homes in game already and respect how difficult it was for you to get them. I acknowledge you should be able to keep them, please help the rest of us enjoy this content as well by providing ways to improve the system so we all can enjoy.

As much as I would like a house of my own, I am content with my little apartment. Is it really so bad as you are making it sound? In my opinion nope. Let's look at other games who have no housing are they still around yes. Having a house is a luxury not a requirement, would I like to be able to get one sure would but it's not going to cause me to 'turn' on this game because I enjoy this game even with the lack of enough housing. It's really not going to make me quit if I can't get one. So while I would like more housing it's really not something the needs to be immediately fixed.

I could be wrong but I don't think we have 20M paying and playing characters out there.
I believe they pull the data from 20M created characters which included trial accounts and people who no longer play the game.

In real life I'd guess we're around 3M active players.

I have a lot of ideas for one, but the lack of storage space for my glam items is more of a "crisis" than lack of a house. I doubt this will "turn the player base against them" as most of it simply DOES NOT CARE

as for your sub, if you buy a coffee daily... thats probably what, $4 a day? so your math since you are fond of it, a monthly sub is about 50 cents a day. the active player base is about, again, 3-4 million. not the 20 million you keep tossing around. speaking of coffee... maybe do not drink so much, you seem to be very agitated about something not very worth stressing over. unlike real life, you will not end up starving and shivering on a city street... in a video game.

Getting a house sucks, no argument there, but the sad truth is, housing is nearly not used at all. Everybody wants a house, but then the vast majority of players leaves it to rot.
I have several neighbours, I have never seen them, not once have I met them in the last year.

My maybe unpopular opinion is that housing needs to be guild only, no private houses. And instead of investing money into providing everyone with a house they should make the housing areas more fun, more interactive, so people actually have an incentive to go there. Change the housing areas into a permanent festival area, make it similar to the gold saucer.

Wow players like you are exactly the reason this is still an issue in game. Perhaps a player who wants to play the housing system in game should be able to do so if they choose. You state that housing does not affect your game play. What if your game play revolves around this in game system but you can't access it. Then does it affect your game play because that it where your interest lies? The game includes this system but according to your math it only affects 99% of the player base and of those perhaps 50% of those people so say 1.5 to 2 million players competing against each other across only 68 servers. So each player is only competing against 29400 players for 1 of 5760 spaces available on each server. This gives you a 0.5% chance of success. And then the 24 hour period you have a chance of getting the land during which you are expected to sit there and click repeatedly for against multiple other players every time a lot happens to one up and then repeatedly. This is a failed system and yes when people waste hours and hours only to be beaten by a bot or a third party system

i guess they could make the players pay rent every month. yeah a lot of people with a lot of money out there and getting gil is pretty easy.... but still it would help a lot
