Future paradox won't stop most people from themselves I think.

If the folks here who hated FF13 had a future them surface.

Future "You're not going to like this game."
    You "It's Final Fantasy."
Future "I'm you from the future! I've played this game! I didn't like it, hence, you won't like it."
You "Maybe I'm different, because I don't have the same tastes as you."
Future "We're the same person! Fine! You don't want to listen?"
*Future you steals your money from present-day you and returns to future*
You "Could have told me the winning lotto numbers, jerk."

It says I had to put something to post the hidden box... but does it have to be in non-white text?

I was a bit miffed about the super-deformed characters at first, but since FFI-FFVI all had super deformed chars I understand the reasoning. (I know, I know.. the concpept art for I-VI wasn't super deformed, but gameplay graphics were).

The only area where FFIX really suffered was the story... It just felt lacking. But it was a cute and nostalgic game that had lots of little nods to the 8-bit and 16-bit era of FF. On top of it all, it was actually a really fun game to play, so I think SE did a good job with it.

BTW, does anyone remember the compeltely worthless US strategy guide for FFIX? Every bit of useful info required you to log into a website and put a code in.. it was beyond terrible.

DNO please explain why you think if they made a TES MMO visiting old locations is fan service? those locations are there, theyve always been there - you were just not able to access them in different iterations of the game. if the mmo is of the world and you have full access to the continent do you expect them to throw out all their lore, world map everything? NO that is the world. If im in midgar and I want to chocobo across the map to get to San'Doria it would make no sense

The only way that would work is if there is an enemy pulling all the dimensions together, in order to IT DOESN"T MATTER WHY HE'S JUST DOING IT!

I think if such a thing happened... I would prefer a mad reboot of the stor(y/ies). And probably not necessarily an MMORPG. Still thinking Final Fantasy Musou-style (one man army) with multiplayer and RPG elements.

Hidden box to spare your eyes...
Merge and reboot the worlds into one (as if dimensional boundaries and time travel might not exist.) Redraw and adapt character relationships, landscapes, power structures, power levels, and motives as necessary.

Whether you have megacorporation vs. empire vs. resistance vs. chaos.

AVALANCE, Returners and NORA plus others might form a resistance group against the megacorp and the empire. They might operate between poorly monitored corporation/imperial cities and neutral trade cities. Operations funded by noblemen like Banon or a mysterious benefactor a.k.a. Rufus.

Empire might consist of several nations with emphasis on militaristic conquest, with Archadia, Baron, Figaro, and Dalmasca... employing the use of ancient resources as weapons (aethryte), superior chocobo forces, airships and cannons powered by crystals, coercing summoners to fight for them.

Megacorporation might consist of with several corporation leaders such as Rufus, Dysley, and Gestahl ~ utilizing magitek weaponry, enslaving espers in magicite, airships powered by magicite, kidnapping summoners to create magicite out of eidolon powers, etc.

And chaos might be a group of ancients, insane bastards, or warmongers planning to do the eradicate the world. Manipulating the strings of others to make this come to fruition. Be that a crazed engineer, a Kefka, a hidden agenda Dysley, a Yuna-plz-marry-me Seymour, making Sephiroth go nuts... again, liches, dark knights, rallying beastmen, or eidolons convinced that man-and-mooglekind is just unsalvageable (because they do wicked crap like enslaving espers in magicite and use aethryte (life stream?) as a weapon).

Maybe some engineering organization that tries to remain neutral, let's call 'em C.I.D. (crazy indigenous dastards that they are) that have split their allegiances.

Perhaps story lines are more event driven, with multiple characters that can be selected per mission.

i.e. a train mission led by the liberation... with Snow and Tifa as brawler types, Lightning and Cloud as sword types, each with their own play mechanic. Snow might have a taunt ability. Cloud's mechanic may be interchanging his swords. They hijack a train maybe as an attack on the megacorporation akin to the FF7 opening mission, end up fighting against Turks, a Judge and Archadian troops leading their own assault, and a mentally warped Terra piloting a new magitek warmech for a boss (free the esper girl). Maybe on Hard mode she would transform into esper mode while piloting.

Or a concert / opera house mission set as a trap to lure Setzer (unpredictable sexy coin-flipping bastad in an airship causing trouble for megacorporation and empire alike OR the resistance want to utilize him for their cause). Celes might represent the megacorporations as an opera singer (mayhaps using a magicite of a Siren), Yuna goes along on behalf of the resistance, and throw in some third character to represent the Empire (does Garnet sing?). Throw in a Bayohne (or if he's taken, Ultros) + a Judge to monitor the ground situation, Resistance sneaking around up top, and some Megacorp elites who have a second motive of kidnapping summoners. If the players choose a songstress, they control the lines that are sung to pull a convincing performance that may buy additional time to capture Setzer. If not a songstress, the player will be responsible for preparing the assault against Setzer, sabotaging other factions and avoid interrupting the performance to corner the gambling man.

And yes... these might have been plots ripped from older table-top gaming sessions under a Final Fantasy ruleset... minus the celebrity characters. Eheheh.

    Short version:
The more I think about this, the more the following picture seems relevant:

...I'll stop... for now. You win this day Santa Claus. *shakes fist*

I just used MVC and Marvel/Dc as examples. To show how multiuniverse games aren't inherent failures. As far as story line goes that is relative to how good the writer is not the idea.

I will write up a starting scenario for giggles to give an example of how the beginning of a new game could potentially be represented.

Scenario: You chose RedXIII's (Nanaki's) Race and so you are starting in Cosmo Canyon. (note: warrior is not indicative of the warrior class job but a title dont get that confused.)

You are awoken by the sound of a tap on your door; as you wipe the sleepiness from your eyes you see a man materialize before you. He tells you that today is the full moon and you must go through with your tribal rights to become an adult and to be recognized as a warrior. This is something that all warriors must do.

You follow the man to the top of Cosmo Canyon; as you enter you meet with Nanaki who describes the arduous task that awaits you. (You later find out that Bugenhagen as since passed and Nanaki has become a leader of cosmo canyon) Nanaki tells you that you must go into the Cave of the Gi and retrieve a tier that falls from his fathers monument once a full moon.

As you set out and enter the Cave of Gi you will play through the familar territory and (not kill x amount of monsters) fight your way through the cave riddled with puzzles and treasure chests. You are stopped right before you exit the cave where Nananki's father resides by (the first boss fight) Gi Nattak.

After you defeat Gi Nattak you proceed through the exit and walk up to Nanaki's fathers stone arrow riddled body and wait as the moon arises. You stare into the moonlight and the silence is disturbed by soft footsteps. The alien noise that disturbed the still silence was belonged to Nanaki. Nanaki tells you of the tribes history and gives you a ceremonial pin signifying your acceptance as a warrior and adult in the tribe.

So there ya go. It represents the warrior race that is nanaki throws you directly into combat as most FF titles are known for. I am sure if you wanted to do something like that with the Ronso race you could. Point being is that you can be creative and original with pre established storyline.

If I were to tie multiple universes together I would use something that has existed in a form in all FF games, which would be Crystals that are the 4 elements. Also every FF has a political/corrupt government theme so I would also probably use those themes to centralize a universal theme and tie the story together. Just saying it could be done and done well.

Hell you could even put a CCG in the game and challenge people to games for gil etc. Something like FF8 or FF9. God why not just do that in FFXIV?

I never understood how developers dont think of the most simplistic elements that could make a game go from O.K. to amazing.
