The way I see the fans:
Pre-FF7
FF7
New Gen (whom FF10-2, FF12 and FF13 were aimed at)
And even a schism of fans:
Went online
Stayed offline ("If I pay for the game once, why do I have to pay monthly? I didn't have to do that with the other FF games?", "I have to play with other people to do the story?", "It's on the computer?/I have to buy a PS2 hard drive?" ~ all of which were new and valid concerns for console gamers around 2002~2003)
I think the earlier one started JRPGs, the more nostalgia one has toward them and eager to see those elements represented / remastered in modern day. I imagine a fully-voiced high polygon 3D Final Fantasy IV with a reboot of a story that doesn't rely on mind control story or what-if branches. Or a high polygon smooth-running Final Fantasy Musou with multiplayer, cross-over elements. And I say high polygon, because I look at FFIV DS or Dissidia and think, "I wish they remake this for the PS3/current gen TV console".
Happened to enjoy FF1, enjoyed FF12 more than I thought I would (blonde Aladdin leveling up in the desert hunting marks) and enjoyed FF13 for combat, character advancement and music... not so much the story and pacing. Can enjoy a good playthrough Dragon Age, Skyrim and Dark Souls as well as a Chrono Trigger or a Final Fantasy 10.
Heck, I'm waiting for Ultima to come back into play to join forces with Iolo and later Dupre to save ye olde Lord British... maybe just a sequel to Ultima IX or SirTech-style Wizardry 8. Granted Xth Generation and Etrian Odyssey is great and all, I just feel like they're not moving in the direction I would have liked to see.
Anyhew, I think an FF MMO could stand to have a few cameos here and there... or the costumes of cameos, maybe as achievement rewards.
