How about this each game is a story-arch and when you are done with the storyarch you move to the next one. To keep longevity the MMORPG releases with the top 3 selling FF titles or fan votes. Going from there you create your vanilla version of the game with the three starting cities of said games as the life of the MMORPG grows you add expansions with another story-arch. With a little creative thought things can be done.
Also what is an FF purist. I played the game since day one on the NES, as a developer you cant make everyone happy just the majority. So that argument is invalid. The hasty generalization is not invalid to the argument because if a person didnt play Final Fantasy games pre FFX they have no ties and therefore wouldnt desire such a game in the first place or is less likely too (nestalgia). Also it is common known fact that the golden years of JPRG's were through the SNES-PS1 era so for someone that started with PS2 they would have little to no backround on the subject.
Think of fans like this
Pre PS2 Generation
Post PS2 Generation
Their ideas of RPGs are going to be considerably different.
Due to voice acting
Not experiencing most of the famous JRPG's ever made:
Parasite Eve
Chrono Trigger
Breath of Fire
Xenogears
Lunar
Star Ocean 1+2
Mario RPG
FF 1-9
You get the point
