Can we add these numbers to the calculations? It sure doesn't feel like 20% chance to get a house.

Player housing is awesome when it's done well and the best way to do that is private instances so that people can have their own private space to do whatever they want to. I shall ever be of the opinion that unless every player is able to get a house (with the option to upgrade the size if you have the right amount of gil) the system is and will ever be unacceptable.
Hell my FC has a mansion, we've had one for a few years now and some of us actively hang out there in our down time. But we rarely if ever see any of our neighbors so we just hang out in our little corner of the goblet most of the time. Hell if it were up to me I'd rather the FC have access to a massive private instanced airship like the prima vista from the SB 24m storyline and leave the houses to the other folks.
the thing that people overlook here (and why it does not feel like a 20% chance to get a house) is that it isn't. 98% of houses are permanently occupied basically and only a few houses open up from time to time where now everyone has to fight for their life. it's not 100% of players battling out which 20% of them gets a house, it's 82% of players fighting for the 1% of houses that open up once in a blue moon.
personally i think that their reasoning for not just opening up endless wards is fine, even if a lot of people dislike it (and it's totally fair to dislike it, but that is a different reasoning to my next point nonetheless), i do however think that they should open up a lot more wards , and yes this will obviously mean better hardware, so even more investments.
the reason why i believe this to be the right thing is that back when ishgard was finalized as truly happening that meant that the housing situation would alleviate at least a little bit. the playerbase expected this, and obviously this was at least somewhat the intendet message from the developers aswell. we however had a massive influx of new players since that announcement, so now even with ishgard housing releasing as intendet we would in fact end up with less houses per player than when shadowbringers released, therefore the original goal of alleviating the housing situation is not really fullfilled anymore in comparison which is why i believe that they should indeed add at least some extra wards for all areas.

I have a medium in Shiro, I love my house. I log in at my house every day, go inside, deal with retainers, make things I like to try and sell. Spend time in my house, sometimes just redecorating a bit or just hanging out. Letting a friend right now use my garden plots so she can do crossbreeding. I also go to my house, check retainers again before I log off, maybe wander around and admire my collection.
I met one of my favorite friends from FF because of housing, we had the plots across from each other before I got lucky to find an open medium. But yes, I rarely ever see anyone in my ward, once in a great great while I might see someone at the marketboard closest to my house. Or if I am over at our FC's house in Lavendar beds, I might see someone at the marketboard.
I do understand the vision Yoshi has for housing wards, I just don't think it's ever going to be realized sadly. I wish they had the server space to do instanced housing. And if they ever made apartments the same size as the different houses with some sort of outdoor area for outdoors decorations and gardens, I'd give up my house, and use an apartment. I almost wish they would do that, make the actual houses FC only, and player houses be apartments the same size as houses.

There will be over 500,000 houses when Ishgard releases along with the Oceania DC and the servers/wards associated with it. Now how many active players who actually want a house I don't really know but it certainly does suck for those who want one and can't get one. Bit disappointing as well given they formally announced Ishgard will only have 24 wards which appears to rule out any additional wards in the current housing districts.
Why they've done nothing more with apartments is beyond me and it appears nothing is coming with Ishgard or I'm sure that would have been mentioned in the live letters. Island Sanctuary might mean something with housing but I'm rather pessimistic it will be something meaningful compared to the current housing we currently have.

Unless I missed something apartments are a lie. They are just an open FC house you can get a FC room. So fixing an apartment means they have to fix every FC room in the game not just apartments. Making it much more difficult. If they had been their own thing I think we would have seen an update by now. They can't even ad more rooms because it would mean again working on FC houses. Sure it was a quick bandaid fix that allowed the knights of the forum to defend. But it was just another bad idea on the road of bad ideas that are FF14 housing.

Apartments don't tie you to a FC so they are a good thing for many who actually change FC's or who might have one disband causing them to lose their room. They also talked about making small/medium and large apartments back around 4.2. The problem is that nothing ever came after those comments. One supposedly would have been able to upgrade an apartments size and that would be a cool addition. Apartments should be more than just one room and that would go a long way to satisfy many.Unless I missed something apartments are a lie. They are just an open FC house you can get a FC room. I don't get the white knight comments. Just drop the rhetoric and discuss the issue labeling people isn't necessary. I think most would agree that housing is an issue that needs to be fixed. I don't really see anyone defending the lack of housing.

You are missing my point. We didn't get apartments. We got back door FC rooms. They apartment has the same limitation for rooms as a FC house. It is a very neat backdoor fix. You get a FC room, but no inconveniences to FC or you. But it tied them into never fixing it. They either have to actually build apartments separate from the FC rooms or fix FC rooms and apartments simultaneously since they are the same thing. If they hadn't just used some backdoor every character would get an apartment at a certain point separate from the wards.
"Most would agree", you want links to the people with thousands of posts that blame players and not the system for the housing problem. Or any other number of defences they have had since this started over seven years ago with no really fix in sight.

I'm not missing the point yes they are basically nothing more than FC rooms but they are in fact separate and as such have been labeled apartments. Was that short sighted yes. I think they should have and still should do more with apartments.
Whether or not they'll ever put the resources into giving us more than what we have remains to be seen but as they stand right now they're certainly not providing much of an alternative for people who want a house.

They have a really bad habit of creating systems, and then abandoning them. There will be over 500,000 houses when Ishgard releases along with the Oceania DC and the servers/wards associated with it.
